Geography and Climate

Chongqing is one of the most famous cities in western China and is also a municipality. With the largest municipal area and population across the country, it is launching point for the renowned boat cruise through the Yangtze River. Located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the city borders Hubei and Hunan to its east, while Guizhou to its south and Shaanxi to its north. The city area covers 82,400 square kilometers and the population accounts for more than 30 million among which include numerous ethnic groups like Yi, Tibetan, and Miao etc. Besides, the Yangtze River and Jialing River intersect in the region.

Chongqing is known as one of the four heating stoves because of its notorious hot and humid weather. Located in the subtropical zone, the city has a humid climate with the two-season monsoonal variations typical of South Asia. Its summers are among the hottest in China with the temperature can be as high as 43 centi-degrees. The annual average temperature in Chongqing is around 19 centi-degrees with the even precipitation accounts for 1439.2 mm.

Tourism and Food

Chongqing has a history which can be traced back 3,000 years; the city has been called Jiangzhou, Yuzhou, and Gongzhou, before getting its present name nearly 800 years ago when Song Guang Zong succeed to the throne and gave the name of Chongqing. Having been a strategic important city through many dynasties endowed the city with brilliant cultures. Chongqing symbolizes Yangtze River civilizations and is the cradle of Bayu culture. There are many historical and cultural relics which makes the city a favorable destination for tourists. The spectacular Buddhist Dazu Rock Carvings are located three hours west of Chongqing in the outlying municipality. In addition, Chongqing is the starting point for the Yangtze River Cruise, which will enable tourists to view the stunning scenery of the renowned Three Gorges. Other attractions in Chongqing include the Gold Buddhist Mountain, the Fishing Town and the ancient Ci Qi Kou village where tourists can buy various handicraft souvenirs.

Chongqing is also famous for its featured hot pot. Although you can find hot pot restaurants around most China’s cities, the hot pot in Chongqing is renowned for its authenticity. Therefore people will not visit Chongqing without trying the Chongqing hot pot. As a cradle of Chuan Cuisine, one the eight branches of Chinese Cuisine, there is a strong spicy flavor in Chongqing dishes and all the street vendors as well as restaurants feature exciting spicy delicacies for the adventurers.

Education

Chongqing is one of the few cities in China which are abounding in educational resources and it is a central city of scientific research and study in the region. Chongqing University is the most famous educational institute in the city. It is a comprehensive university which offers a wide range of traditional and specialized subject interests.
