From Almaty to Xi'an: Daniyal's Road to a Full Silk Road Scholarship

Nov,03 2026

When Daniyal (pseudonym) first contacted SICAS, he had a clear goal and very little time. He wanted to study mechanical engineering at master's level in China on a full scholarship, and most Silk Road Scholarship windows were still months from opening. What he did next — and when he did it — made the difference.

Daniyal, a bachelor's graduate from Almaty, Kazakhstan, was a strong but not exceptional student. His grades were solid, his IELTS score was modest, and his family could not support a master's degree abroad. Like many students from Belt and Road countries, he saw the Silk Road Scholarship as his one realistic way to study in China. He almost left everything until spring. A friend who had applied the year before had done exactly that and missed every early deadline.

Joining the Talent Pool

Instead of browsing university websites one by one, Daniyal submitted his profile to the SICAS Belt and Road / CSC Scholarship Talent Pool: his transcript, language result, preferred language of teaching and his budget, which was effectively zero.

The match came back with a small group of universities that held Silk Road quotas in mechanical engineering and accepted his profile. One of them was Xi'an Jiaotong University — a university with deep engineering roots in a city that has been a centre of the Silk Road for many centuries. Daniyal liked the symmetry. His advisor at SICAS liked the fit even more: the master's programme was English-taught, and his bachelor's background matched the department's expectations.

The Months That Mattered

The application window opened in winter. Daniyal's real work had happened in the months before it.

With his SICAS advisor, he rewrote his study plan again and again. The first version, he admits, could have been sent to any university in any country. The final version explained exactly which areas of mechanical engineering he wanted to explore — robotics and advanced manufacturing — and why Xi'an Jiaotong was the right place to do it. His advisor checked every document against the university's checklist and caught a problem he would never have noticed: his physical examination form would expire before his expected arrival date, so he completed it again at the right time instead of being caught in summer.

When the window opened, his file was submitted within days, with the university's agency number for the online scholarship system. He was interviewed by the department in spring, and the award letter arrived before summer: a full Silk Road Scholarship covering tuition, accommodation, a monthly living allowance and medical insurance.

Arriving in Xi'an

SICAS arranged his accommodation before departure and airport pick-up on arrival, with the usual first-week guidance to help him register and settle in. Walking through the campus gate that first week, Daniyal says, was the first moment the whole process felt real.

His advice to students back home who hope to study in China is simple. The scholarship is won before the application opens. Start early, not when the window opens.
