About Northwestern Peking University
Peking University, founded in 1898 as the Peking University, was the first national comprehensive university in China and also the highest educational administrative organ in China at that time. After the 1911 Revolution, it was renamed in 1912.
As the center of the New Culture Movement and the source of the May Fourth Movement, as the earliest place in China to spread Marxism and democratic scientific thought, and as the earliest activity base of the Communist Party of China, Peking University has made irreplaceable contributions to the revitalization and liberation of the nation, the construction and development of the country, and the civilization and progress of society. It has played an important vanguard role in the process of China's modernization. The traditional spirit of patriotism, progress, democracy and science, as well as the study style of diligence, rigor, truth-seeking and innovation, are endless here and passed down from generation to generation.
In 1917, CAI Yuanpei, a famous educator, took office as the president of Peking University. He carried out effective reform of Peking University in accordance with the principle of freedom of thought and inclusiveness, which promoted ideological liberation and academic prosperity.
After the Lugou Bridge Incident in 1937, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University moved south to Changsha to form Changsha Temporary University. Soon after, the temporary university moved to Kunming and was renamed National Southwest Associated University. After the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Peking University was resumed in Beiping in October 1946.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the national colleges and universities were adjusted in 1952, and Peking University became a comprehensive university focusing on the basic teaching and research of arts and sciences, training a large number of talents for the country. According to incomplete statistics, Peking University has more than 400 alumni and faculty members, and quite a number of influential people in China's humanities and social sciences also come from Peking University.
Since the reform and opening up, Peking University has entered a new period of unprecedented development and construction, and has become one of the two key universities in the national "211 Project".
With the support of the state, Peking University duly launched the "Plan to create a world-class University", and since then, the history of Peking University has opened a new page.
