What Is a Foundation Program in China?
Oct,02 2026
A foundation program in China is a preparatory course that has usually lasted one academic year and has prepared international students who want to study in China for entry into a bachelor's degree. A foundation program in China has combined Chinese language study with basic academic subjects, and it has suited students whose Chinese level or grades have not yet met the entry requirements of a degree programme. After completing the foundation year and passing the required exams, students have progressed to bachelor's degree programmes at Chinese universities.
What does a foundation program in China mean?
In China, a foundation program has often been called a "pre-degree course" or a "preparatory course" (预科 in Chinese). It has been offered by universities themselves or by their affiliated language colleges.
The foundation program in China has served as a bridge between a student's current level and the entry requirements of a bachelor's degree. It has not been a degree by itself. Instead, it has prepared students for degree-level study, mainly by building their Chinese language ability and by teaching basic academic subjects.
What will you study in a foundation program in China?
Most foundation programs in China have combined two parts:
Chinese language study. This has been the main part of the course. Students have usually aimed to reach HSK Level 4 or Level 5 by the end of the year, because many Chinese-taught bachelor's programmes have required this level. The HSK has been organised through the official Chinese test website, chinesetest.cn, where a new version, HSK 3.0, has been scheduled to launch on 13 December 2026.
Basic academic subjects. Depending on the track, students have taken courses such as mathematics, physics or chemistry for a science or engineering track, or basic economics and business courses for a business track.
Some foundation programs in China have also included study skills and cultural activities, which have helped students adapt to life at a Chinese university before their degree has begun.
How long does a foundation program in China take?
A foundation program in China has usually lasted one academic year, from September to June or July. Some universities have also offered a spring intake, which has started in February or March.
After the foundation year, students have normally taken the HSK exam and have then used their foundation results and language certificate to apply for a bachelor's degree. Students who aim for a Chinese Government Scholarship have been able to check the official scholarship information on CampusChina, the "Study in China" portal of the China Scholarship Council.
How much does a foundation program in China cost?
Tuition fees for foundation programs in China have generally ranged from RMB 15,000 to RMB 30,000 per year, depending on the university and the city. Living costs have been extra. In many Chinese cities, students have spent between RMB 1,500 and RMB 3,000 per month on accommodation, food and transport.
These figures have varied a lot between universities, so you should always check the latest fee information on the official pages of your target university.
How does a foundation program in China lead to a bachelor's degree?
There have been two common routes after a foundation program in China:
Progression at the same university. Some universities have allowed foundation students who have passed their exams to continue into a bachelor's degree at the same institution. In some cases, the university has set its own internal test instead of asking for HSK.
Applying to another university. Students have also used their foundation results and HSK certificate to apply to other Chinese universities, including English-taught programmes.
It is important to understand that completing a foundation program in China has not automatically guaranteed admission to a bachelor's degree. For most students who plan to study in China, entry has depended on the student's results and on the requirements of the target university and programme. Since the 2026/2027 academic year, some universities have also asked for CSCA results during undergraduate admission, so you should check whether your target university requires the CSCA exam after your foundation year.
Is a foundation program in China the right choice for you?
A foundation program in China has suited students whose Chinese level has been below HSK 4, or whose academic background has not fully matched the entry requirements of their target degree. Students who already meet the language and academic requirements have usually been able to apply for a bachelor's degree directly.
