Their Names Are Now in Space: Harbin Institute of Technology’s Bayi-04 Satellite Launches Successfully

On 25 August 2026, at 11:21 am Beijing time (GMT+8), the Bayi-04 satellite, named ‘Harbin’, has been successfully launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre aboard a Long March-6C carrier rocket. The satellite has entered its designated orbit, and its solar panels have been deployed as planned, marking the mission’s success.
Developed by Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), the satellite, weighing approximately 18.7 kg, is now operating in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of around 500 kilometres. It carries several science payloads, including a science education display screen, high-definition camera, micro camera and polarisation camera.
The project has also involved students from 77 primary and secondary schools in Harbin, who have participated in different stages of the satellite development under the guidance of HIT’s satellite research and development team.
For the university community, however, one detail has stood out. The names of all undergraduate students admitted to Harbin Institute of Technology in 2025 have been engraved on the satellite’s structure. Their names have now travelled into space.
