What is HSK Level 7~9?

HSK Level 7~9 focuses on the competence of candidates who use Chinese as a second language to carry out proper and decent social communication on complex topics in the fields of social life and academic research. The exam is designed and developed according to the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (GF0025-2021) (hereinafter referred to as the "Grading Standards"), which is a volume of three levels, including Level 7, Level 8 and Level 9, divided according to the examination results, with Level 9 being the highest level.

HSK Level 7~9 has a total of 98 questions, which comprehensively test candidates' five language skills, listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. The test paper is divided into five parts: listening, reading, writing, translating, and speaking. Each part mainly examines one language skill, supplemented by other language skills. The specific content and duration are as follows:

The HSK Level 7~9 test report provides six scores in listening, reading, writing, translating, speaking and a total score, as well as a grade assessment result.



Why is HSK Level 7~9 developed?

The existing HSK Level 1 ~ Level 6 examinations basically meet the needs of foreign Chinese language learners for elementary and intermediate level tests, but for the students studying in China for the master's and doctor's degrees with Chinese language majors from various countries, and the personnel using Chinese to carry out academic research, economic, cultural, and technological exchanges, there was no corresponding assessment tools for advanced Chinese language level to speakers of other languages. Therefore, according to the "Grading Standards", on the basis of maintaining the stability of the existing 6-level examinations, HSK are added to Level 7~9, forming an examination grading system with "three levels and nine bands".


What competence do HSK Level 7~Level 9 respectively refer to?

HSK Level 7~9 comprehensively examines the Chinese language communication ability and topic task content stipulated in the "Grading Standards", and measures the five language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.

Candidates who pass HSK Level 7 shall have good listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and preliminary professional translating ability. They should be able to conduct basic normative, fluent and decent social communication on a wide range of high-level topics.

Candidates who pass HSK Level 8 shall have a good command of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and basic professional translating ability. They should be able to conduct more proper, fluent and decent social communication on various high-level or professional topics.

Candidates who pass HSK Level 9 shall have good listening, speaking, reading, writing skills and professional translating skills. They should be able to comprehensively use various skills to conduct proper, fluent and decent social communication on various topics in various situations.



What is the use of HSK Level 7~9?

HSK Level 7~9 is aimed at high-level learners of Chinese as a second language, including students studying in China for the master's and doctor's degrees, Chinese language majors from various countries, and those who use Chinese to carry out academic research, economic, cultural, and technological exchanges, etc. The scores of HSK Level 7~9 can meet diverse needs and provide a reference for the following purposes:

●Proof of Chinese proficiency for the enrollment and graduation of master and doctoral students;

●Reference for classification guidance, class division, course exemption, credit grant;

●Reference for employers in academic institutions to recruit, train and promote staff;

●Certificate for Chinese language learners to check out and improve their Chinese proficiency.


A total of 212,000 students from more than 140 countries took part in the HSK tests over the first half of this year, up by almost 10 percent from the same period last year.


At present, there are 1275 test sites in 160 countries around the world for Chinese Language Proficiency Tests, among which more than 70% provide online and home online Tests. In 2021, 59 test points will be added in 7 countries including Maldives, Kuwait, Lesotho, Cambodia, Sweden, Mexico and Ethiopia. 3580 Chinese language examinations were organized throughout the year, serving 4 million Chinese learners worldwide,
