International Student Engages with Local Community and Entrepreneurship Support in Beijing

An international student from China University of Petroleum, Beijing, recently took part in a community event in Fengtai District, Beijing, where he raised a question about support available to young entrepreneurs.

The event was part of the “Report to the People” activities organised by local subdistricts in Fengtai District. During the question-and-answer session, Shahhan, an international student and young entrepreneur, raised his hand and shared his thoughts on the initiative.

He said that he had been deeply impressed by the openness and sincerity of the event. He then asked a practical question:

“Especially for young entrepreneurs who are just getting started, what services and support can Majialou Subdistrict provide?”

Wu Xuefang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Majialou Subdistrict, responded to his question. She explained that the subdistrict has been working to create a more supportive environment for young people and entrepreneurs.

For young people and international students who have entrepreneurial ideas, the subdistrict provides access to one-stop entrepreneurial support and connections through its local business service facilities. Wu also said that the subdistrict plans to further improve its youth-oriented spaces and service system, creating more opportunities for young people and international students to communicate, develop ideas and pursue innovation and entrepreneurship.

The response left a positive impression on Shahhan. He described the interaction as “particularly good” and said that a good entrepreneurial idea needs not only financial support, but also an appropriate space in which it can develop.

“When cities provide young people with friendly spaces, young people's ideas have the opportunity to truly become reality,” he said.

For Shahhan, the value of the event also went beyond entrepreneurship. He noted that activities like this allow people from different cultural backgrounds to meet and communicate, giving international students an opportunity to experience the development and vitality of the city in which they live.

A Closer Connection with Local Life in China

For international students, studying in China is not limited to university classrooms and campus activities. Living in a Chinese city can also provide opportunities to interact with local communities and gain a closer understanding of everyday life.

Shahhan's participation in the Fengtai event is one example. As an international student, he was able to raise a question directly with a local government representative about an issue relevant to his own interests. The response also showed that local community services can be available to international students alongside other young people living and working in the area.

This kind of direct communication can help international students better understand how Chinese cities serve their communities. It also creates opportunities for international residents to share their own ideas and experiences with local officials and other members of the community.
