Foundation Program vs. Direct Bachelor's Admission in China
Oct,03 2026
International students who want to study in China have usually had two paths to a bachelor's degree: a foundation program (one preparatory year) or direct admission to a degree programme. In short, direct bachelor's admission in China has suited students who already meet the language and academic requirements, while a foundation program in China has suited students who need one more year of language and academic preparation. This article has compared the two paths in detail.
The two paths in brief
Direct admission means that you apply to a bachelor's degree programme in China and start the degree as soon as the university has accepted you. Many English-taught programmes have admitted students directly, based on their high school results and, in some cases, an IELTS or TOEFL score.
A foundation program means that you first complete a preparatory year in China, which has usually combined Chinese language study with basic academic subjects. After the foundation year, you have applied for a bachelor's degree with your foundation results and your HSK certificate.
Foundation program vs. direct admission: side-by-side comparison
Question | Foundation Program in China | Direct Admission in China |
|---|---|---|
Language requirement at entry | Often no HSK required at the start | Usually HSK 4–5 for Chinese-taught programmes; IELTS/TOEFL may be required for English-taught programmes |
Academic requirement at entry | More flexible; weaker grades may be accepted | High school results must meet the programme's entry line |
Time before the degree starts | About one extra year | None |
Typical tuition | RMB 15,000–30,000 for the foundation year | RMB 18,000–40,000 per year for the degree (varies by programme) |
Main purpose | Build Chinese ability and academic basics | Start the degree directly |
Best for | Students below HSK 4, or with a weaker academic background | Students who already meet the entry requirements |
These figures have been typical ranges. The exact requirements have always depended on the university and the programme.
When has direct bachelor's admission been the better choice?
Direct admission has usually been the better option when you have already met the requirements:
Your Chinese has reached HSK Level 4 or 5, and you want a Chinese-taught degree. You can register for the HSK on the official website, chinesetest.cn.
You want an English-taught programme, and your high school results (plus IELTS/TOEFL, if required) have met the entry line.
You want to finish your degree as soon as possible, without an extra preparatory year.
For students who qualify, direct bachelor's admission in China has saved both time and money.
When has a foundation program been the better choice?
A foundation program in China has usually been the better option when you have needed time to prepare:
Your Chinese has been below HSK 4, but you want a Chinese-taught degree in the future.
Your high school grades have not fully met the entry requirements of your target programme.
You are not yet sure which field you want to study, and you want one year to build your language and academic base first.
A foundation year has added about one year to the total study plan. However, it has often increased a student's chances of being accepted into a stronger university afterwards.
How has the CSCA exam changed both paths?
Since the 2026/2027 academic year, the CSCA exam has become an important reference for undergraduate admission in China. According to a notice published by Chinese embassies, students who apply for Chinese Government Scholarship universities at undergraduate level have been required to take the CSCA before they submit their application, and many other universities have asked for CSCA results as well.
This has affected both paths:
Direct admission applicants have needed to plan their CSCA exam session before the application deadline.
Foundation program students have usually taken the CSCA exam near the end of the foundation year, before they have applied for the degree.
You can check the CSCA schedule and register on the official website, csca.cn.
Can you change from one path to the other?
Yes. Students who have started in a foundation program in China have later applied to other universities, and students who have been rejected from direct admission have often entered a foundation program and have applied again the following year.
The two paths have not been locked. What has mattered most has been your language level, your academic results and the requirements of your target university at the time when you apply.
Three questions to help you decide
Before you choose between a foundation program and direct bachelor's admission in China, ask yourself:
Does my current language level meet the entry requirement of my target programme?
Do my high school results meet the entry line of the universities that I want?
Am I willing to spend one extra year preparing, if that improves my options?
If you have answered "yes" to the first two questions, direct admission has probably been your path to study in China. If not, a foundation program in China has given you a realistic route towards the same degree.
