Tips on CSC Scholarship Application

Oct,12 2022

?It is about the time for the application of the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC Scholarship or CGS Scholarship) every year. For international students, this scholarship plays a crucial role helping them study in China.

However, the seats are just too FEW.

Tips 1:

If you are apply for the CSC scholarship (TYPE A)

The pre-admission letter can be a necessary document. As the most common way to apply for Type A scholarship is to apply through the Chinese Embassy in the applicant's country, the Embassy would ask the applicants to provide some documents such as identification, diploma, transcript, and pre-admission letter. The purpose is to assure that the target university is able to accept the applicant if he or she gets the scholarship in the end. Without the pre-admission letter, the embassy is taking the risk of wasting the precious scholarship quota for a student with high uncertainty. However, the pre-admission letter cannot be regarded as a guaranttee or promise for the scholarship.

If you are apply for the CSC scholarship (TYPE B)

The pre-admission letter will be unnecessary. It may be prudent to contact the supervisors before you start the application, getting more information about the field and program that you are about to apply for. You and the supervisors may also make some sort of unofficial and informal agreements or documents showing willingness, such as the acceptance letter.

Some skills of communication

Last but not least, we would like to share some skills of communication. Some applicants contact the supervior and promptly ask for the acceptance letters and even the scholarship. Trust me, that is not a smart move at all, which will only make yourself and the supervisor awkward. Telling people how bad you want the scholarship does not help you win the scholarship at all. What the supervisor really cares about is your academic background, study and research capability, plan of study and how you can assist he or she to do the research.

Tips 2:

Most of the universities in China are providing programs taught in Chinese or English, and sometimes both. The language proficiency is among the most important factors that may affects the result of your application for the CSC Scholarship.

"What is the basic requirement for language proficiency?"

It depends on what kind of program you choose, i.e., Chinese taught or English taught. In other words, you should decide what language you will be using for your future study.

To study programs taught in Chinese, for example, you should have at least passed the HSK 4 (level 4) for undergraduates and HSK 5 (level 5) for postgraduates.

" I don't have any basic knowledge about Chinese language, but I want to study the Chinese taught program. Can I get the scholarship that covers one- year Chinese learning?"

The answer is THAT IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN. You have to  master Chinese language before applying for the scholarship.

"I did not take any of the language tests mentioned above, am I still allowed to apply for the CSC Scholarship."

Yes, go ahead to apply. BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT YOU WILL BECOME LESS COMPETITIVE THAN THOSE WHO TOOK THE TESTS AND MET THE REQUIREMENTS ON LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY. Therefore, you are highly encouraged to take the language tests before making the application.
