About SYSU

Founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a great national hero, a great patriot and a great pioneer of China's democratic revolution, and jointly founded by the early leaders of the Communist Party of China, Sun Yat-sen University is one of the important cradling points for the spread of Marxism in China, with a fine revolutionary tradition, bright red genes and outstanding character pursuit. Sun Yat-sen University was originally called National Guangdong University. After the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the university was renamed National Sun Yat-sen University in 1926.

 

Today's Sun Yat-sen University was formed by the merger of Sun Yat-sen University and Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in October 2001. Through the joint construction of the ministry and the province, and with the strong support of the state, the local and the society, Sun Yat-sen University has become a first-class and internationally renowned modern comprehensive university, forming a comprehensive, research-oriented and open school-running characteristics.

 


 

Guidelines for application of "Advanced Postgraduate" programme

 

According to the relevant regulations of the International Department of the Ministry of Education and the China Scholarship Council, the application guidelines for this scholarship program are formulated in accordance with the actual situation of our university. Starting from the 2023/2024 academic year, the Chinese Government Scholarship "Graduate Students" program has been renamed as "High-level Graduate Students" program.

 

Scholarship profile

Established in 2008 by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the "High-level Graduate Student" Program is a full scholarship program for international students to support the construction of high-level universities in China and build the brand of higher education in China. It is directly selected and recruited by key Chinese universities to study in China.

 

The program adopts the principle of "individual application, institution recommendation, expert review and merit-based admission" to select international students with excellent academic background, professional ability and future development potential. As the enrollment unit of the Chinese Government scholarship program, Sun Yat-sen University recruits international graduate students (master's and doctoral students) from all over the world. The final admission result is subject to the expert review result of China Scholarship Council.

 

Application conditions

(1) Non-Chinese citizens holding valid foreign passports.

(2) Physical and mental health must meet the medical examination standards for applying for a study visa or residence permit in China.

(3) To study for a master's degree in China, you must have a degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree from a Chinese university and be under the age of 35; Applicants to study for a doctoral degree in China must have a degree equivalent to a master's degree from a Chinese university and be under the age of 40.

(4) Friendly to China, diligent and studious, excellent grades, good conduct, law-abiding, no records of violations of school rules and discipline, no public security penalties, no criminal record.

(5) The Chinese language proficiency must be at least 180 points in HSK5. Applicants who have used Chinese as the language of instruction can submit the "Chinese teaching Certificate" issued by the school, and upon verification by the school, they are exempt from submitting the HSK score certificate. To apply for a Master's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, applicants must have a score of 210 or above in HSK5 and an intermediate score of 60 or above in HSKK.

 

Funding content and criteria

(1) Free tuition

(2) Free of on-campus accommodation fees

(3) The standard of living allowance is 3,000 yuan/month/person for master degree students and 3,500 yuan/month/person for doctoral students

(4) International students are exempt from comprehensive insurance premiums

Note: If there is any change in the above funding criteria, please refer to the one published by China Scholarship Council in the current year.


Application process

(1) Online application by China Scholarship Council.

Login "Chinese Government Scholarship Management Information System for Studying in China"Fill in the application information (Type: B; Organization code: 10558), please print and submit the Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form online with your own signature.

(2) Sun Yat-sen University online application.

Applicants should log on to the website of International Students Office of Sun Yat-sen University (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn) and register an account. Then, select "2023 Chinese Government Scholarship High-level Graduate Program" to apply.

 

1. Valid ordinary passport and personal photo

Passports should be valid later than December 1, 2023. If you do not meet the requirements, please renew your passport in time. Former residents of the Chinese mainland (Mainland), the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Taiwan region who have acquired foreign nationality shall submit a certificate of cancellation of household registration or renunciation of Chinese nationality, or an official certificate of non-Chinese nationality issued by Chinese diplomatic missions and consular offices.

 

2. Education, degree certificates and certification reports

Doctoral applicants who have graduated from Chinese universities should submit the Electronic Registration and Record Form of Educational Certificates of the Ministry of Education and Online Verification Report of Chinese Higher Education Degrees on https://www.chsi.com.cn of the China Higher Education Student Information Network of the Ministry of Education. Applicants with doctoral degrees from overseas universities should submit their master's or bachelor's degree Certificates of Foreign Studies on the website of the Service Center for Overseas Studies of the Ministry of Education (https://www.cscse.edu.cn). Fresh graduates can first submit the pre-graduation certificate issued by the current school, and those who do not submit the master's degree certificate before enrollment will be invalid.

Master's degree applicants who have graduated from Chinese colleges and universities are required to submit "Electronic Registration and Record Form of Ministry of Education Diploma" and "Online Verification Report of China Higher Education Degree" on https://www.chsi.com.cn of the China Higher Education Student Information Network of the Ministry of Education. Applicants with a master's degree from an overseas institution should submit the "Certificate of Foreign Academic Degree" on the website of the Service Center for Overseas Studies of the Ministry of Education (https://www.cscse.edu.cn). Fresh graduates can first submit the pre-graduation certificate issued by the current school, and those who do not submit the bachelor's degree certificate before enrollment will be invalid.


3. Complete transcripts

Doctoral applicants who have graduated from institutions in China must submit to the academic affairs department of the school or the relevant student administration department issued and stamped, including master's and undergraduate grades. Fresh graduates can first submit the transcript issued by the current school. Those who do not submit the complete transcript of the master's degree and undergraduate degree before enrollment will be invalid.

Master's degree applicants who have graduated from institutions in China are required to submit undergraduate results issued and stamped by the educational affairs department or the relevant student administration department of the school. Fresh graduates can first submit the transcript issued by the current school. Those who do not submit the complete transcript of the undergraduate period before enrollment will be invalid.

 

4. Proof of Chinese proficiency

Applicants are required to submit a score report with a score of 180 or above of HSK5 within the validity period or "Proof of teaching Chinese". To apply for a Master's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, applicants must have a score of 210 or above in HSK5 and an intermediate score of 60 or above in HSKK. Applicants who have used Chinese as the language of instruction can submit the "Chinese teaching Certificate" issued by the school, and upon verification by the school, they are exempt from submitting the HSK score certificate.

 

5. Two letters of academic recommendation

Referees should be professors, associate professors or experts with equivalent technical titles in the field of application (see Annex 1 for templates).

 

6. Study and research program in China

The text should be more than 1000 words, including but not limited to personal study and work experience, academic research results, doctoral research plan, personal development plan after graduation, etc. (See Attachment 2 for templates). If you have published papers, please submit abstracts of published papers.


7. Physical examination report and blood test results

The examination results must be stamped with the official seal of the hospital and are valid for 6 months (see Annex 3 for the template).

 

8. No proof of criminal record

The applicant must submit a certificate of no criminal record within the validity period issued by the local public security organ, usually within 6 months before the date of submission of the application.

 

9. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship

According to the requirements of Chinese government scholarship http://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn, fill out the application form, Type Type B; Sun Yat-sen University Admission code: 10558, sign, scan and upload on the last page.

 

10. Supporting supporting materials

Applicants may submit award certificates or proof of experience.

 

11. Letter of commitment

The applicant promises that the application information is true, legal and valid. Please print your signature and upload it (see Attachment 4 for the template).


12. Personal information sheet

The international Student management system automatically generates a personal information form, please print your signature and upload it.


Note: The original documents of the application must be in Chinese or English. For documents in other languages, the original documents, Chinese or English translations and notarized copies must be attached. Please ensure that the email, wechat account and contact phone number filled in the system are accurate. Our school will send a notification of supplementary materials via email (email address: admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn). Applicants who fail to submit the supplementary materials in time, whose notarial certificate does not meet the requirements or whose contact information is incorrect, etc., shall bear the responsibility for the unsuccessful application.

 

Enrollment major

Please refer to Annex 5 and Annex 6 for the admission major catalogue of the 2023 Chinese Government Scholarship High-level Graduate Program (doctoral and Master's degree), but the specific admission major catalogue will be subject to the approval of the Ministry of Education. If the declared major is beyond the above scope, the application will be deemed invalid.

Selection procedure

(1) Qualification examination

Our school will comprehensively review the applicant's foreign status, highest academic qualifications, academic achievements, language level, study and research plans, recommendations, etc., to determine the assessment list.

(2) Assessment

The assessment organized by the enrollment unit is generally carried out in one of the following ways: (1) interview; (2) Interview and written examination, the specific assessment method, place and time are determined by the admissions unit and inform the applicant.

 

(3) Pre-admission

Our university will determine the pre-admission list according to the applicant's qualification examination and assessment results, as well as the applicant's professional volunteer. Sun Yat-sen University will send the pre-admission notice by email (email address: admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn). Applicants are required to upload the notice of pre-admission on the Chinese Government Scholarship Application system (https://campuschina.org). PhD applicants are also required to upload a study and research plan in China signed by their PhD supervisor.

 

(4) Admission

The final admission result is subject to the expert review result of China Scholarship Council. The paper version of the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Foreign Students in China will be sent out in July-August. Please make sure that the mailing address and the recipient's contact phone number are valid and available.

The admitted applicant shall apply for X1 visa at the Chinese Embassy (Consulate) with the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Foreign Students in China, and convert the X1 visa into a study residence permit within 30 days after entering China. Those who fail to go through the relevant procedures within the time limit will be disqualified from admission. The school does not accept students with non-study visas. Those who have expired their visa or residence permit are not allowed to stay or carry out activities on campus.

 

Other instructions

(1) The admitted students must come to the school for registration and registration procedures according to the registration date and registration place required in the Admission Notice. Those who fail to register without approval will be deemed to have given up the admission qualification and cancelled the scholarship qualification.

(2) According to the relevant regulations and requirements of the Ministry of Education, our university will conduct physical examination and qualification review for all admitted applicants after admission. Anyone who does not meet the admission requirements or practices fraud will be disqualified from admission or school status, and the scholarship eligibility will be revoked

(3) Participate in the annual evaluation of the scholarship as required. Those who fail to pass the evaluation will be suspended or cancelled.
