The Chinese Government Scholarship “University Graduate Program” is a full scholarship set up by China’s Ministry of Education to select international graduates with excellent academic background, professional ability and development potential.

Established in 1951, Southern Medical University (SMU), a national key university (1979), was originally the First Military Medical University, PLA. In August 2004, it was handed over to the local government of Guangdong Province and renamed as Southern Medical University. It is the only Provincial Prospective High-Level Medical Universities and the first Ministry-Province Co-constructed Medical University. SMU is one of the first 8 prestigious universities to run the pilot 8-year medical education program. It is also the first universities to pilot the program of education and cultivation of outstanding doctors in China.  Its 10 academic disciplines including Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biology and Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Behavioristics, Immunology, Chemistry, Materials Science, Microbiology and Social Science were listed by ESI (Essential Science Indicators) as the world’s top 1%, among which Clinical Medicine was listed as the world’s top 1‰.

01 Scholarship Program

Majors: All majors available in Southern Medical University. (Please refer to Attachment 1 for the 2023 Degree Programs for International Master’s /Doctoral Students of Southern Medical University.)

Degree: Full-time graduate students (master’s and doctoral students)

Medium of Instruction: Chinese or English

Length of Major Study: 3 years

02 Scholarship Coverage & Standard

1. Exemption from tuition fee;

2. Provided with accommodation on campus; Off-campus accommodation students who are permitted by the University can receive accommodation monetary subsidy each month;

3. Provided with stipend;

4. Provided with comprehensive medical insurance.

03 Eligibility

1.Applicants must hold a valid foreign passport and meet the relevant requirements for international students in China. Doctoral students must have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40, Master’s students must have a bachelor degree and be under the age of 35.

2.Applicants should respect Chinese culture and abide by all laws and regulations as applicable to international students studying in China. Applicants should be in a proper physical and mental health condition and should be honest. He/ She should not have any criminal record in any country.

3.Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and be fully commit themselves to the program and should be fully motivated to study in China. The GPA should be above 3.0 for the previous phase of study, without failure or retake in any course.

4.Language proficiency

Chinese Medium Program: Applicants must reach a score above 180 in HSK 5 or provide other comparable certificates proving Chinese proficiency. Applicants receiving the last degree with the instruction in Chinese are exempt from submitting the Chinese proficiency certificates, but the certificate of Chinese medium issued by the school graduated from shall be provided;

English Medium Program: Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must reach a score above 90 in TOEFL (20 or above for each item) or 6.5 in IELTS (6.0 or above for each item); or provide other comparable certificates proving English proficiency. Applicants from English-speaking countries or receiving the last degree with the instruction in English are exempt from submitting the English proficiency certificates, but the certificate of English medium issued by the school graduated from shall be provided.

04 Application Deadline

March 5, 2023

05 Application and Enrollment Review Process

1.By March 5, 2023, Applicants should register their account at the Southern Medical University’s International Student Service System information accurately and upload the following documents:

(1) Scanned copy of valid passport’s information page;

(2) Scanned copy of notarized highest Academic Degree Certificate, Expected Graduation Certificate for fresh graduates (original one and English-translated one);

(3) Scanned copies of transcript of all courses during the highest academic degree education (original one and English-translated one);

(4) Study Plan: A minimum of 1000 words for master’s degree applicants and a minimum of 1500 words for doctoral degree applicants written in Chinese (Chinese medium applicants) or English (English medium applicants). The content includes personal studying and working experiences, academic research achievements, research and learning plans during master or doctoral study, personal developing goals or plans after graduation, etc.;

(5) Two original copies of recommendation letters written by professors or associate professors in Chinese or English (with signatures and contact information);

(6) Provisional Acceptance Letter from a professor of Southern Medical University;

(7) Certificate of language proficiency;

(8) Proof of academic research achievements or awards;

(9) Self-introduction video (3-5 minutes, no more than 50M);

(10) Scanned copy of Foreigner's Physical Examination Form completed in Chinese or English;

(11) ID photo (2-inch blue background photo without hats).

2. The University will review the completeness and authenticity of the applicant’s materials and adopt the following methods for assessment according to the situation of the applicants and major requirements: (1) Interview (2) Written Examination and Interview.

3. Before March 20, the University will notify the applicants of the pre-admission result and provide pre-admission notification via email or International Student Service System, and applicants should submit their applications in the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System

4. The China Scholarship Council will organize experts in relevant disciplines to make final review of the applicants’ academic performance, comprehensive quality and development potential, and selects the best candidates. The scholarship applicants who are not enrolled will be given priority if they are willing to apply for our self-financed programs.

06 Notes

1. Each applicant can only submit ONE application for the Chinese Government Scholarship "University Graduate Program" to ONE Chinese university.

2. Once enrolled, scholarship recipients are not allowed to change their major, study period or language of instruction.

3. Students granted with Chinese Government Scholarship must participate in the annual evaluation after they enter the university, and the evaluation result will be used to confirm whether the scholarship will be provided, suspended or canceled in the next academic year.
