Study Engineering in China

Useful Information

2014 Apr-08

There are three major types of civil engineers: geotechnical, structural and transportation.

Geotechnical engineers

Geotechnical engineers focus on having strong foundations. They look at how is this building or structure going to work with the ground in this area. What shape will work best, which materials, etc.

Structural engineers

Structural engineers work on things such as bridges or dams and are most concerned with making sure the structure is strong and lasts for a long time.

Transportation engineers

Transportation engineers deal with everything from highways to airports.

China is a fascinating place to start a career in this field. You might have heard of a tiny civil engineering (structural) project called the "Three Gorges Dam". This dam is the largest power station of installed capacity. The Gorges dam could be one of the longest envisioned civil engineering projects ever! Sun Yat-sen thought about this project back in 1919 and it wasn’t completed until almost 100 years later. It’s interesting to note that one of China’s proudest projects was first drawn up by an American engineer in 1944. China then sent a group of engineers to the USA for training. China greatly appreciates the insight of other countries and is looking to learn and then improve on the way structures are built in China. As a civil engineering intern you will see firsthand just how Chinese companies plan their structural building and will be able to contribute your insight as well.

Internships are the perfect opportunity to test different industries and company environments to learn about what type of career best suits you.

Responsibilities of Civil Engineering Internship

  • Analyze survey data
  • Plan projects keeping in mind a variety of factors such as cost, regulations, environment, etc
  • Test soil
  • Test various building materials
  • Use advanced design software
  • Participate in surveying
  • Assist with bid proposals

Creativity, math, civil, listening and problem-solving skills are required if you want to find an internship in civil engineering in China . A degree in civil engineering is preferred, however those with strong math skills, statistics, engineering mechanics and fluid dynamics may also apply.
