The Winter Short-term Chinese Programs at East China University of Science and Technology is a 1 Semester long program for international students, taught in Chinese/English.

IntroductionIntroduction

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), originally named East China Institute of Chemical Technology, was founded in 1952. ECUST is the authority of information cooperation networks among Academics of Chemical Technology in China. The MBA courses for international students are increasing popular among them. Besides, having founded 5 overseas Confucius Institutes, East China University of Science and Technology enjoys a worldwide high reputation in Chinese language teaching.You will have great opportunities to study the essence of Chinese cultures there.

ProgramAbout the Program

School of International Education of ECUST accept Chinese language learners all year round. Terms begin at each February and September. The Chinese language courses have six levels: elementary (I,II), intermediate (I,II) and advanced (I,II). Students will be divided into small groups according to the application and class-dividing interview.

2. Teaching Features

IES focuses on the improvement of students' language performance and it provides good environment for language study. All classes are arranged in small size with 15 to 20 students to make sure of a better teaching result.

IES has a rational arrangement of courses. There are 20 class hours' language courses from Monday to Friday, all of which are in the morning. In the afternoon, students could choose any elective courses provided.

3. Main Courses

Language courses: intensive reading, extensive reading, listening, oral Chinese, writing, HSK guidance, etc.

Elective courses: Chinese calligraphy, martial art, cooking, appreciation of Chinese song and folk song, appreciation of Chinese movie,etc.

Teaching materials: most textbooks are compiled and published by Beijing Language and Culture University.

Teaching practises: There are regular visits to historical and cultural cities and scenic spots around Shanghai.

1) Courses for Elementary Class I:

Compulsory Course: Elementary Chinese, Elementary Oral Chinese, Elementary Spoken Chinese, Intensive Reading

Textbooks: A Chinese Textbook (I) Elementary Oral Chinese (I) Listen to Chinese (I) A Chinese Reading Textbook (I) All the textbooks are published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press

Elective course: After-school Tutorial, Guidance to HSK, Calligraphy, Chinese Martial Art, Chinese Cooking, Chinese Music, Movie Appreciation , etc.

Class Hours: 380 to 400 class (45min./class hour)

Teaching Objects: The students could have an excellent command of about 1250 Chinese words, have everyday conversation in Chinese with Chinese people and pass HSK Basic level.

2) Courses for Elementary Class II:

Compulsory Course: Elementary Chinese, Elementary Oral Chinese, Elementary Spoken Chinese, Intensive Reading

Textbooks: A Chinese Textbook (II) Oral Chinese (I) Listen to Chinese (II) A Chinese Reading Textbook (II) All the textbooks are published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press

Elective Course: After-school Tutorial, Guidance to HSK, Calligraphy, Chinese Martial Art, Chinese Cooking, Chinese Music, Movie Appreciation, etc.

Class Hours: 380 to 400 class (45min./class hour)

Teaching Objects: The students could have an excellent command of about 2750 Chinese words, have complete daily conversation in Chinese with Chinese people and pass HSK elementary level A or B.

3) Courses for Intermediate Class I:

Compulsory Course: Intermediate Chinese, Intermediate Oral Chinese, Intermediate Spoken Chinese, Intermediate Chinese Listening, Intensive Reading, Audio-visual-oral Chinese, Basic Chinese Writing

Textbooks: Developing Chinese: A Intermediate Chinese Textbook (I) Developing Chinese: Intermediate Oral Chinese (I) Developing Chinese: Intensive Reading(I) Developing Chinese: Intermediate Chinese Listening (I) Developing Chinese: Intermediate Chinese writing (I) Audio-visual-oral Chinese Textbook (I) All the textbooks are published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press, expect for Audio-visual-oral Chinese Textbook which will be provided by the teacher.

Elective Course: Chinese Culture, Chinese Tradition, Business Chinese, Tourism Chinese, After-school Tutorial, Guidance to HSK, Calligraphy, Chinese Martial Art, Chinese Cooking, Chinese Music, Movie Appreciation, etc.

Class Hours: 380 to 400 class (45min./class hour)

Teaching Objects: The students could have an excellent commandof about 3850 Chinese words, make relative complex dialogue on economy, social affairs in Chinese and pass HSK Intermediate level B or C.

Elective course: Current Chinese Literature, The History of Chinese Philosophy, Advanced Business Chinese, Tourism Chinese, After-class Tutorial, Guidance to HSK, Calligraphy, Chinese Martial Art, Chinese Cooking, Chinese Music, Movie Appreciation , etc.

Class Hours: 380 to 400 class (45min./class hour)

Teaching Objects: The students could have an excellent command of about 6500 Chinese words, have wide-ranging talk with Chinese people, read Chinese newspapers and magazines and listen to Chinese news broadcast without any difficulty, write Chinese essay of about 600 words, be up to general job in China and pass HSK adcvanced level B or C.

6) Courses for the Advanced Class II:

Compulsory Course: Advanced Chinese, Advanced Oral Chinese, Listening to News Broadcast, Intensive Reading, Advanced Writing, Journals and Newspaper Reading, Chinese Society

About East China University of Science and Technology


10/1952  East China Institute of Chemical Technology was founded with the approval of the central government. It was the first single-subject chemical institute in China and was formed through the consolidation of the chemical departments of Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Utopia University, Soochou University and Jiangnan University. The institute was first located on 195 Zhengfa Rd, Jiangwan District in Shanghai, the campus of the former School of Science of Tongji University. Professor Zhang Jiangshu, a distinguished educator and highly accomplished chemist, was appointed as the President of the institute.

07/1954  Moved to the Meilong District. The campus had 38500 m2 in building space for classrooms, offices, and dormitories. 

11/1956  Received permission to admit graduate students. Simultaneously began to enroll international students.

10/1960  Promoted to one of the national key universities of the Ministry of Higher Education.

01/1965  The institute, Beijing University, Tsinghua University and Nanjing University were the four key universities ordered by the government to build branch campuses in the hinterland of China. The institute’s southwest branch was established in Zigong, Sichuan Province.

04/1972  Admission of students from all walks of life

12/1977  Admission of regular undergraduates and postgraduates after resumption of the National College Entrance Examination. 

11/1981  By the authority of the State Department, the university began to train  doctorate in Chemical Engineering and four other disciplines.

11/1985  Established the first batch of research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships: Chemical Engineering Postdoc Station and Industrial Chemistry Postdoc Station.

02/1993  Be renamed as East China University of Science and Technology by approval  National Ministry of Education (ECUST).

06/1996 Became one of the national "211 Project" universities.

06/2000  Tried to run Graduate School, which was formally established later in June 2004.

03/2002  Approved by Ministry of Education, School of Online Education of ECUST was established at East China University of science and Technology.

12/2005  Science Park at East China University of science and Technology was established.

02/2006  East China University of science and Technology     began to enroll  MPA students.

11/2006  School of International Education was established.07/2007  Fengxian campus was put into use
