About East China University of Science and Technology


10/1952  East China Institute of Chemical Technology was founded with the approval of the central government. It was the first single-subject chemical institute in China and was formed through the consolidation of the chemical departments of Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Utopia University, Soochou University and Jiangnan University. The institute was first located on 195 Zhengfa Rd, Jiangwan District in Shanghai, the campus of the former School of Science of Tongji University. Professor Zhang Jiangshu, a distinguished educator and highly accomplished chemist, was appointed as the President of the institute.

07/1954  Moved to the Meilong District. The campus had 38500 m2 in building space for classrooms, offices, and dormitories. 

11/1956  Received permission to admit graduate students. Simultaneously began to enroll international students.

10/1960  Promoted to one of the national key universities of the Ministry of Higher Education.

01/1965  The institute, Beijing University, Tsinghua University and Nanjing University were the four key universities ordered by the government to build branch campuses in the hinterland of China. The institute’s southwest branch was established in Zigong, Sichuan Province.

04/1972  Admission of students from all walks of life

12/1977  Admission of regular undergraduates and postgraduates after resumption of the National College Entrance Examination. 

11/1981  By the authority of the State Department, the university began to train  doctorate in Chemical Engineering and four other disciplines.

11/1985  Established the first batch of research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships: Chemical Engineering Postdoc Station and Industrial Chemistry Postdoc Station.

02/1993  Be renamed as East China University of Science and Technology by approval  National Ministry of Education (ECUST).

06/1996 Became one of the national "211 Project" universities.

06/2000  Tried to run Graduate School, which was formally established later in June 2004.

03/2002  Approved by Ministry of Education, School of Online Education of ECUST was established at East China University of science and Technology.

12/2005  Science Park at East China University of science and Technology was established.

02/2006  East China University of science and Technology     began to enroll  MPA students.

11/2006  School of International Education was established.07/2007  Fengxian campus was put into use

Entry Requirements

Applicants for Master's degree: Hold a foreign ordinary passport, be in good health; possess a bachelor's degree or above; 

Applicants for doctoral studies: Hold a foreign ordinary passport, be in good health; possess a master's degree or above. 

2. Language Proficiency: For applications with Chinese language instruction, a HSK 5 level score of 210 (inclusive) or a HSK 6 level score of 180 (inclusive) or above is required; those who have obtained a bachelor's or master's degree in Chinese language from a Chinese university can be exempted from submitting HSK scores. For applications with English language instruction, a TOEFL score of 80 (inclusive) or an IELTS score of 6.0 (inclusive) or a Duolingo score of 105 (inclusive) or above is required; applicants whose previous academic stage was taught in English or whose native language is English do not need to provide proof of English proficiency.


Application Materials


1. Valid ordinary passport photo page (valid until September 1, 2026 and beyond) 

2. Highest academic degree diploma and degree certificate. 

For fresh graduates, a projected graduation certificate should be issued by their respective schools. If admitted, they are required to provide scanned copies of their graduation certificate and degree certificate before registration. 

3. Complete transcripts of all courses from the undergraduate stage. 

4. Proof of Chinese or English proficiency (HSK scores obtained from September 1, 2023 onwards are valid). 

5. Letter of Acceptance from the Supervisor (if there is a submission requirement). 

6. Two recommendation letters written by professors or associate professors, in either Chinese or English. 

The issuance time of the recommendation letter should be later than September 1, 2024 and should include the following information: the title of the recommender, the employer's name, contact number, email address, and the recommender's signature. 

7. Study plan or research plan for coming to China (if applicable), no less than 800 words. 

8. Other supporting application materials (such as published papers, award certificates, etc.). 

9. Certificate of No Criminal Record. If the home country cannot issue a certificate of no criminal record, a commitment letter for no criminal record can be signed; if currently studying in China, a proof of no misconduct during the school period can be submitted. 

10. Economic guarantee certificate. 

11. Copy of the "Foreigner Physical Examination Form". The original should be kept by the applicant. This form is uniformly printed by the Chinese Health Quarantine Department and must be filled out in English. The applicant should conduct the examination strictly in accordance with the items required in the "Foreigner Physical Examination Form". A "Foreigner Physical Examination Form" with missing items, without a personal photo attached, without a seam seal on the photo, or without the signatures and stamps of a doctor and a hospital is invalid.
