About East China University of Science and Technology


10/1952  East China Institute of Chemical Technology was founded with the approval of the central government. It was the first single-subject chemical institute in China and was formed through the consolidation of the chemical departments of Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Utopia University, Soochou University and Jiangnan University. The institute was first located on 195 Zhengfa Rd, Jiangwan District in Shanghai, the campus of the former School of Science of Tongji University. Professor Zhang Jiangshu, a distinguished educator and highly accomplished chemist, was appointed as the President of the institute.

07/1954  Moved to the Meilong District. The campus had 38500 m2 in building space for classrooms, offices, and dormitories. 

11/1956  Received permission to admit graduate students. Simultaneously began to enroll international students.

10/1960  Promoted to one of the national key universities of the Ministry of Higher Education.

01/1965  The institute, Beijing University, Tsinghua University and Nanjing University were the four key universities ordered by the government to build branch campuses in the hinterland of China. The institute’s southwest branch was established in Zigong, Sichuan Province.

04/1972  Admission of students from all walks of life

12/1977  Admission of regular undergraduates and postgraduates after resumption of the National College Entrance Examination. 

11/1981  By the authority of the State Department, the university began to train  doctorate in Chemical Engineering and four other disciplines.

11/1985  Established the first batch of research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships: Chemical Engineering Postdoc Station and Industrial Chemistry Postdoc Station.

02/1993  Be renamed as East China University of Science and Technology by approval  National Ministry of Education (ECUST).

06/1996 Became one of the national "211 Project" universities.

06/2000  Tried to run Graduate School, which was formally established later in June 2004.

03/2002  Approved by Ministry of Education, School of Online Education of ECUST was established at East China University of science and Technology.

12/2005  Science Park at East China University of science and Technology was established.

02/2006  East China University of science and Technology     began to enroll  MPA students.

11/2006  School of International Education was established.07/2007  Fengxian campus was put into use

ENROLL IN CHINA

Entry Requirements

1. Hold a foreign ordinary passport; have a high school diploma or above, and be in good health. 

2. At least 16 years old; for those who are under 18 years old as of August 31 of the application year, a guarantee letter from a Chinese or foreign adult guardian residing in China must be provided (the guardian guarantee letter template can be downloaded from the download center page). 

3. In accordance with the regulations stipulated in the document "Jiaowai Hanfeng [2020] No. (For one year, if the actual residence abroad is 9 months or more, it can be calculated as one year, based on the entry and exit stamps.) 

4. Language proficiency requirements: 

For applications requiring Chinese language instruction, one must have a HSK level 4 or above (190 points or above for science and engineering majors, 210 points or above for liberal arts and business majors, with a writing score of 60 points or above). If a proof of previous Chinese language instruction during the academic stage can be provided, the HSK certificate is not required. 

Applicants for English-taught programs should have a TOEFL score of 80 (inclusive) or above, an IELTS score of 6.0 (inclusive) or above, or a Duolingo score of 105 (inclusive). If applicants can provide proof of English-taught study during their previous academic stage or if they are native English speakers, they may be exempted from submitting English language proficiency test scores.


Application Materials

1. Valid passport photo page (valid until September 1, 2026 and beyond). 

2. High school graduation certificate or equivalent educational qualification certificate. 

For current high school graduates, a projected graduation certificate should be issued by their school. If admitted, they are required to provide a scanned copy of their graduation certificate before registration. 

3. Complete transcript of all courses during high school or results from internationally recognized standardized tests (such as A-LEVEL/IB/IGCSE/AP/SAT/ACT/BC/UEC/STPM, etc.) 

4. Proof of Chinese or English proficiency (The validity period of the language test result is two years. It must be within the validity period when applying) 

5. Personal Statement: More than 600 words, including an introduction to personal and family background, reasons for choosing the school and major, etc.; Applicants for Chinese-taught programs should write in Chinese, while those for English-taught programs should write in English. 

6. Certificate of No Criminal Record. If the home country cannot issue a certificate of no criminal record, a commitment letter for no criminal record can be signed; if currently studying in China, a proof of no misconduct during the school period can be submitted. 

7. Economic guarantee certificate. 

8. Copy of the physical examination form for foreigners.
