If Shanghai is like New York, then isn’t Shanghai University the New York University of China? Although not as influential as NYU, Shanghai University is still one of China’s best 100 universities. Shanghai University was founded in May 1994, by consolidating four former institutions of higher learning: Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science & Technology, Shanghai Institute of Science & Technology and the former Shanghai University. Until now, SHU has offered English-taught MBA and MIT courses for Master’s degree for international students, which is ranked top one in China. 1. The Aim The discipline includes two specialties, or sub-disciplines: Precision instrumentation and machinery, Measurement & test techniques and instrumentation. The discipline is focused on the subjects: modern design method of precision instruments and machinery, modern testing and sensory techniques, micro-machine and special robot techniques, intelligent instrument and embedded system, computer testing & controlling techniques and fault diagnosis, information processing, network communication and managing automation. For the master students it is required to learn the foundational courses in the disciplines of precision instrument and machine, measurement & test techniques and instrumentation, etc., and to know the development tendency in the field of instrumentation science and technology. It is emphasized to cultivate the students to have innovative spirit and creative idea, and to improve their ability of analyzing and solving problems by their own. 2. Research program and Thesis A master student must obtain required credits before he/she is eligible for undertaking research project for his/her master thesis. The thesis project is the most important measure that helps the student to apply foundational theory and knowledge to solving problems in research work, to cultivate innovative spirit and to train the abilities of innovation. The thesis work should include the following steps in general: 1. Literature survey: The student is required to make an extensive literature survey in research field under the direction of the supervisors, and to give at least two oral reports on the seminars of their discipline. 2. Kickoff report: The student must complete a kickoff report about his/her research project and work-plan in details before the forth semester. The project should have the meaning either of scientific /technical value, or of solving technological problems arising in the industry. The report should have a length of more than 3000 words and not less than 30 reference articles. In the report a historical review, the conceptual idea on the research, the problems to be solved and the way might be followed should be included. This report must be assessed by an expert group including the supervisor and other 3-5 professors. The expert group will give their comments and suggestion to it. 3. Mid-term Report: The student must submit a mid-term report with about 1000 words summarizing the research progress half year later after kickoff report, and then give an oral report to supervisor group in the academic seminar. 4. Defense of Thesis: After the thesis being completed, the student should attend a defense meeting held according to the regulations of the National Degree Office to report research achievements, to answer questions, and to listen to the judgment given by defense committee. 5. Publication requirement: The student must have at least one article related to the thesis project published /accepted by the core journals (the student must be the first author or the second only when the supervisor is the first), or a patent applied, or an important achievement (as a principal researcher ordered in 5) identified by the organization equivalent to / higher than the level of provincial one.

Shanghai University Libraries is composed of three libraries. The main library is on the new Baoshan campus, Wenhui library is located on Yanchang campus, and Lianhe library resides on Jiading campus. The University library, with a total floor space of 55,000 square meters, has 25 reading rooms and 3,000 seats. The main library occupies approximately 38,000 square meters.

The libraries contain more than 3 million volumes, more than 4,600 periodicals, and many electronic resources including Elsevier, Ebsco, Kluwer, and Academic Press. The library materials are comprehensive and cover diversified areas. In cooperation with Shanghai Writer’s Association, the main library has a collection room for Shanghai writer’s works.

The library includes the departments of acquisition, cataloging, periodicals, circulation, information reference, technical service, reading, and special collection. The administrative offices include the Director’s Office and Office of General Affairs. The director of library is Professor Yuanda Dong, a famous material scientist.



As a member of IFLA (International Federation of library Associations), Shanghai University libraries have established contacts and academic exchanges with many other universities, institutes, and libraries, both domestic and abroad.

Shanghai University Libraries have paid great attention to the development of an unique, automatic, modern, and digital library. There are more than 300 computers that provide all kinds of services. The library website provides all the electronic resources including accessing and connecting to China Academic Library & Information System, and the Shanghai Education Network Library. Through the campus network system, users can access the electronic databases of Shanghai University Libraries. The campus network of the university is built upon an infrastructure of the gigabit Ethernet and the three campuses are interconnected by the fiber optic backbone. The libraries adopt SUN Enterprise 5500 as the main server and HORIZON library automation system for library and information management.

The libraries has established an interlibrary loan and resource-sharing system with most of the universities in Shanghai.



 

Yanchang Campus

The international students' dormitory consists of four apartment buildings linked together, named Building Xinyuan, which started using in the year of 2002.With 193 rooms (only 4 double rooms)in which there are 198 beds, the building can accommodate 198 students.

Staff members are particularly assigned to take the responsibility of the security and service 24 hours a day. Boiled water is available in wash rooms of each floor. All the rooms are well furnished and equipped and look neat and beautiful.

There is a laundry room each floor with pre-paid washing machines and a mini-shop selling foods and articles for the daily life for the convenience of international students.

Baoshan Campus

The international students' dormitory consists of four apartment buildings linked together, named Building V and Building Z & W, which started using in the year of 2001, 2006 & 2008. With 186 rooms & 280 rooms in which there are 259 beds & 360 beds, the building can accommodate 245 & 360 students.

Staff members are particularly assigned to take the responsibility of the security and service 24 hours a day. Boiled water is available. All the rooms are well furnished and equipped and look neat and beautiful. Each building has its own elevator except Z & W building. Life turns out to be convenient.

There is a laundry room with pre-paid washing machines in each building and a mini-shop only in V building selling foods and articles for the daily life for the convenience of international students.

3 Steps to Apply to a Chinese University

A passport-sized photo taken recently of the applicant.

3.  Bachelor's degree diploma
Graduation certificate should be in Chinese or English.If not, it should be translated into Chinese or English and be notarized.

4.  Transcript of undergraduate school

5.  Two recommendation letters
From professor,associate professor or equivalents.

6.  Certificate of English proficiency test
IELTS or TOEFl will only be required if the applicant is not a native English speaker.

7.  Certificate of Chinese language education
For applying Chinese-medium programs.

8.  Study plan
Including study purpose, research interest and research plan in brief. (at least 1 A4 page)
