1. Introduction to the discipline of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics

The discipline of linguistics and applied linguistics has a long history in Shanghai Normal University. SNU has made brilliant achievements on it. From the 1950s, language study in SNU has always been in the first line with the leadership of Professor Bin Zhang and other intellectuals. It started to grant M.A. degree in the late 1970s. Professor Bin Zhang started to teach Ph.D. candidates in modern Chinese grammar. In the late 1990s, with the leadership of professor Kaitai Fan and professor Huyang Qi, this discipline is authorized the qualification to grant M.A. and Ph.D. ICCS accepts the application for M.A. or Ph.D. degree in linguistics and applied linguistics. More than 200 students are currently pursuing their M.A. or Ph.D. degree in ICCS. They are from China, Korea, Japan, U.S.A., Indonesia and so on.

2. Missions

The discipline of linguistics and applied linguistics seeks the new cultivation model to conduct high-qualified graduate students.In the Ph.D. programs, the discipline aims at the high-qualification standard. It comprehensively combines the course teaching, leading-ahead lecture, academic saloon, Internet discuss, thesis guide and other method to strengthen students' academic qualification, personal qualification, profound knowledge and other aspects. In recent years, many high-qualified graduates has complete their study in ICCS. They are playing a more and more important role in the academic field in China, Korea, Japan, U.S.A, Indonesia and so on.

3.Research Options The Ph.D. degree in linguistics and applied linguistics offers 5 options 1) Teaching Chinese as A Second Language Prof. Kaitai Fan 2) Teaching Chinese to Overseas Chinese Prof. Benyi Tao and Prof. Huyang Qi 3) Theory and Application of Grammar Prof. Huyang Qi 4) Computational Linguistics Prof. Kaitai Fan 5) Grammar in Teaching Chinese as A Second Language Prof. Changlai Chen

About Shanghai Normal University

History

Founded in 1954, SHNU was then named Shanghai Teachers Training College. In 1956 it was expanded into two colleges, Shanghai No. 1 Teachers College and Shanghai No. 2 Teachers College. Two years later, the two colleges were combined to form Shanghai Teachers College.

From 1972 to 1978, it was known as Shanghai Normal University after combining four other ones including East China Normal University. In 1978 it was restored to Shanghai Teachers College, and was renamed as Shanghai Teachers University in 1984. It combined with Shanghai Teachers College of Technology in October 1994 to form a new Shanghai Normal University. From September 1997 to August 2003, SHNU took in successively the following units as its subordinates: Shanghai Teacher Training College, Department of Human Sanitation and Health of Huangling Teacher School, Shanghai Xingzhi Art School, and Shanghai Tourism Institute. The university has 16 colleges and 81 research bodies. Also located in SHNU are, among others, Shanghai Teachers Training Center, Shanghai College Teachers Training Center, and the Editorial Department of Academic Abstracts of Liberal Arts of College Journals.
