Program Description
1. Major Declaration
JI offers programs in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Although students are asked to declare one of the two programs as their major when they apply for JI, they may choose to switch majors in the future. Irrespective of the intended major, all undergraduate students take the same core courses in the first two semesters. Students are required to declare majors in the spring semester of their sophomore year. To be qualified for declaring a major, students must have completed the first year level Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Introduction to Engineering and Introduction to Computer & Programming with satisfactory grades and a cumulated GPA specified by individual programs.
2. Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
The rapidly converging world needs more professionals with profound knowledge of electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science. The Electrical and Computer Engineering program at UM-SJTU Joint Institute is an interdisciplinary program. It is supported by the EECS Department of UM and EIEE School of SJTU.
3. Outcomes of JI Undergraduate Degree
Graduates of the Institute’s undergraduate programs will have:

Entry Requirements
Basic Requirements
- An equivalent of China's high school graduation certificate
- High school graduation certificate and transcript
- Be in good health
- Over 18 years in age
- Aquire some Chinese language ability
To be considered for admission into the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, you should complete these classes by the end of your senior year in high school:
- Four years of English
- Four years of science, including chemistry and physics
- Four years of mathematics (pre-calculus is required)
- Three years of social science
- One unit of a pre-engineering subject, such as CAD, drafting, or computer-related technology (recommended)
- Two years of foreign language (recommended)
- One unit of computer science (recommended)

Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.
