In 1940, the Communist Party of China founded the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), the country's first science and engineering university, in Yan'an, Shaanxi province. Since the founding of the New China, BIT has been one of the key universities in the country and was among the first to enter the national "211 Project" and the "985 Project", and to be designated as a "Top A World-class University".
BIT was originally founded in Yan'an in 1940, and moved to Beijing in 1949. In 1952, it was renamed Beijing Engineering College, becoming the first defense industry university in the People's Republic of China. In 1988, the university was renamed the Beijing Institute of Technology. Today, it is affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Aerospace Engineering at BIT, ranking among the best among domestic universities, is a national program.
The program at the school of Aerospace Engineering includes a combination of classroom, laboratory, and research experience that will give you knowledge and skills that meet and exceed the demands of today's workplace. The curriculum of includes 156 credit-hours, culminating, senior year, with the completion of a capstone research project in one of four application areas: Flight Vehicle Engineering, Flight Control, Launching and Propulsion Engineering, and Mechanics. The school offers masters and doctoral degree programs in Aerospace Engineering for students, who would like to continue their educational journeys.

Beijing Institute of Technology founded in Yan'an in 1940 is a national key university. It is a research-oriented university of science, engineering and humanities with science and engineering as its backbone. It is one of the first universities to be authorized to open a graduate school and was funded by the central government. BIT is also one of the national "Project 211" universities receiving preferential support from the state. In 2000, BIT was listed in "Plan 985", which gives priority for development by Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND), Ministry of Education (MOE) and Beijing Municipal Government. In 1999, BIT passed the evaluation for "Outstanding in Undergraduate Program" sponsored by MOE.
