In 1958, the Central South College of Fine Arts moved south from Wuhan to Guangzhou and was renamed the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 2023, after review and approval by the Academic Degrees Committee of The State Council, six new degree authorization points were adjusted and added. Two degree authorization points will be approved in 2024. At present, the school has a total of 3 doctoral degree authorization points, including 2 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees (Art Studies and Design Studies), and 1 category authorized for doctoral professional degrees (Fine Arts and Calligraphy). There are 9 master's degree authorization points, including 3 first-level disciplines for master's degree authorization (Art Studies, Design Studies, and Architecture), and 6 master's professional degree authorization categories (Fine Arts and Calligraphy, Design, Drama and Film, Museum, Landscape Architecture, and Education). The school has a postdoctoral research station for art studies.  

Introduction to Art

Analyze the essence, function and development laws of art, covering aesthetic theories, art schools (such as classicism and modernism) and cross-cultural art comparisons.

Case: Analyze the evolution of artistic concepts in different eras by combining Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Picasso's Guernica.

History of Chinese and Foreign Art

China Section: From Neolithic painted pottery to Ming and Qing literati paintings, with a focus on explaining the "Northern and Southern School Theory" of landscape painting and the system of the imperial painting academy, etc.

Western section: Ancient Greek sculptures, the Three Masters of the Renaissance, Impressionist light and shadow techniques, contemporary installation art, etc., supplemented by the appreciation of museum collections.

Aesthetic principle

Explore aesthetic experience and standards of art criticism, such as Kant's "non-utilitarian aesthetics" and Hegel's "Beauty is the sensible manifestation of ideas" and other theories.

The predecessor of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts was Central South College of Fine Arts. It was established in Wuhan, Hubei Province in 1953 in accordance with the national construction layout as a specialized art college. At that time, it was formed by the merger of relevant departments and personnel from Central South College of Literature and Art, South China People's College of Literature and Art, Guangxi Provincial Art College and other institutions. The first principal was Hu Yichuan, a renowned revolutionary artist who participated in the Yan 'an Literature and Art Symposium. The first vice principals were Yang Qiuren, a famous oil painter, Guan Shanyue and Yang Taiyang, two famous traditional Chinese painters

3 Steps to Apply to a Chinese University

1. Non-chinese citizens holding valid foreign passports, with an age of no more than 35 years old in principle.

2. Good health is required, and one must meet the physical examination standards for applying for a study visa or residence permit to China.

3. Be friendly to China, abide by laws and regulations, have good conduct, be diligent and eager to learn, have excellent academic performance, no record of violating school rules and regulations, no public security penalties, and no criminal record.

4. Those who come to China to pursue a master's degree must hold a degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree from a Chinese university.

5. The score of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) must reach level 5 or 6 (180 points or above).

1. The first page of a valid ordinary passport (the validity of the passport should be later than December 1, 2025), and a valid visa page or residence permit page (required for students in China).

2. Four one-inch, bareheaded, white-background color photos taken within the last six months.

3. Bachelor's degree or above or a pre-graduation certificate.

Applicants who graduated from institutions within China must submit the Electronic registration and Verification Report of Academic Certificates of the Ministry of Education and the Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degrees of the Ministry of Education (https://www.chsi.com.cn).

Applicants who graduated from overseas institutions must submit the "Certificate of Overseas Education and Degree" on the website of the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (https://www.cscse.edu.cn).

Fresh graduates can first submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by their current school. Those who fail to submit their bachelor's degree certificates before enrollment will have their admission qualifications revoked.

4. Complete transcript of the undergraduate stage. The transcript should be issued and stamped by the academic affairs department or relevant student management department of the school attended. 5. HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 5 or 6 certificate (valid for 2 years).

6. Two academic recommendation letters. Two recommendation letters from professors, associate professors or experts with equivalent technical titles in the applied professional field must be submitted, written in either Chinese or English (including the recommenders' handwritten signatures and valid contact information).

7. Study and Research Plan in China. The text should be written in either Chinese or English. The main content should be over 1,000 words, including but not limited to personal study and work experience, academic research achievements, research plans during the master's stage, and personal development plans after graduation.

8. Portfolio. A portfolio related to the applied major, with a brief introduction to each work (including the work name, size, creation time, creation description, etc.); Or the list and abstracts of published academic articles; Or other original academic achievements.

9. Proof of economic status and guarantor of affairs in China.

Submit a deposit balance certificate issued by the bank, with an amount of approximately 100,000 RMB or more. If the bank account is not held by the applicant himself/herself, proof of family relationship with the economic guarantor must be submitted simultaneously, such as: birth certificate, household register, notarized documents, etc.

Submit the guarantor of the affairs in China along with a copy of the guarantor's identity document.

10. Copy of the "Physical Examination Form for Foreigners". The examination results must be stamped with the official seal of the hospital and are valid for six months.

11. "Admission Application Form for International Students of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts" and Commitment Letter.

12. Other supporting materials that may be required to be submitted.
