Officially established in June 2022, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) is a legally-independent educational institution co-established by the Mainland and Hong Kong. HKUST(GZ) will explore new frontiers in cross-disciplinary education and innovate pedagogies. By doing so, HKUST(GZ) will play a constructive role in cultivating forward-looking talents with global vision, promoting the higher education reform at a national level, and accelerating educational collaboration between Hong Kong and Mainland as well as the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
In response to the increasingly complex challenges faced by the rapidly changing world, HKUST(GZ) adopts a brand-new and cross-disciplinary academic structure featuring “Hub” and “Thrust” to substitute the conventional one characterized by “school” and “department”, to facilitate cross-disciplinary education and vigorously develop emerging and frontier disciplines. It is a groundbreaking move in the higher education community across the globe.
HKUST(GZ) has established four Hubs, namely Function Hub, Information Hub, Systems Hub, and Society Hub, which comprise 15 thrusts. The admission of undergraduate students will begin in 2023, with the first batch of programs covering Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Smart Manufacturing.
HKUST(GZ) adopts the collegiate system for its undergraduate education. Colleges serve the purpose of cultivation and prepare students socially for mature life. Within each college, students have the opportunity to meet academics from around the world and from a broad range of subjects, based on which a tutor system is implemented. Colleges, as a platform for cross-disciplinary enlightenment, complement students’ academic growth in their professional fields. In short, each college is a community for students to live, study and conduct academic events, and a home for them physically and mentally
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) indeed is the realization of this ambition to transform education for the future, with its cross-disciplinary academic structure designed to complement the well-established disciplinary foundation at the Clear Water Bay campus.
This vision of transforming the future fits well to the master plan of the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) which will serve as a strategic hub to catalyze the combined talents of the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, and nine cities in Guangdong Province. The initiative will also strengthen knowledge transfer to bridge Hong Kong’s gap in high-tech manufacturing through the strong mainland supply chain network.
To conceive this new vision of HKUST, the University signed a tripartite agreement with the Guangzhou Municipal Government and Guangzhou University in 2018. Under the agreement, the University will jointly establish HKUST(GZ) in the Nansha district of Guangzhou with full support of the local authority and partner. With the preparatory approval already obtained in 2019, HKUST is vigorously progressing to the next phase of this important milestone.
