The predecessor of this major is the "mechanical manufacturing process and equipment" major established in 1972, began full-time undergraduate education in 1978, obtained a bachelor's degree authorization in 1983, and was adjusted to mechanical design and manufacturing and its automation major in 1998 according to the Ministry of Education's "Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Colleges and Universities". The mechanical engineering discipline on which the major relies is the provincial key discipline and the backbone discipline of the Hubei Provincial Automobile Industry Advantage Characteristic Discipline Group, and has the right to award master's and master's degrees. In 2005, it was approved as an undergraduate brand major of higher education in Hubei Province, in 2009 it became a special professional construction point of higher education established by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, in 2011 it was approved as a pilot major of the strategic emerging (pillar) industry talent training plan for colleges and universities in Hubei Province, and in 2012, it was selected as a pilot major of the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education. This major has a teaching team with a combination of full-time and part-time, reasonable structure and rich experience in engineering practice, including 14 professors, 18 deputy senior titles, 14 people with doctoral degrees, 6 experts with special allowances of the State Council, Chutian scholars in Hubei Province, and famous teachers in teaching; There are 12 part-time teachers in enterprises, including 2 industrial professors in Hubei Province; 2 provincial-level outstanding scientific and technological innovation teams, teaching teams and 2 outstanding grass-roots teaching organizations; 1 provincial excellent course.
