IntroductionIntroduction

Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was founded in 1951. It was identified as a national key university in 1979. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed as Southern Medical University. It now has two campuses, Guangzhou and Shunde. The school is the only medical institution among the first five provincial high-level university key construction universities in Guangdong Province, one of the first "ministerial and provincial" jointly built medical universities in China, one of the first eight universities in China to offer an eight year clinical medicine major (bachelor's and doctoral degree combined), and one of the first pilot universities for the Excellent Doctor and Excellent Doctor (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Education and Training Program in China. Nominated for the top 300 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2024.

The school is the only independent medical institution that offers an eight year medical education program, and the "Top notch Basic Medical Student Training Base" has been selected as the National Top notch Basic Discipline Student Training Plan 2.0 Base. Becoming a "101 Plan" university by the Ministry of Education, basic medicine and clinical medicine have been selected for the "101 Plan". As the first completion unit, it has won 12 national teaching achievement awards and 49 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 2 first prizes for national teaching achievements. There are currently 7 national characteristic majors, 16 Guangdong characteristic majors, and 6 Guangdong famous brand majors. 23 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 40 national first-class undergraduate courses have been approved, ranking first in the number of selected medical colleges in China. There are currently 17 national level planned textbooks, 8 national level excellent courses, 2 national level ideological and political demonstration courses (taught by renowned teachers and teams), 4 national level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 awards for the first National Excellent Textbook Construction Award, 1 national clinical teaching training demonstration center, and selected as an independent pilot unit for the construction of the "one-stop" student community comprehensive management model by the Ministry of Education. Establish one national level graduate training demonstration base and 25 Guangdong joint training graduate training demonstration bases. In recent years, many academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering have emerged among graduates, including Hou Fanfan, Xia Zhaofan, Gao Tianming, Liu Chao, and others. In the National Practicing Physician Qualification Examination, clinical medicine has the highest pass rate and ranks fourth in the country, while traditional Chinese medicine has ranked first in the country three times. The "Internet plus" and "Challenge Cup" series of competitions ranked top two among medical colleges in China, and won 48 national awards, including 1 China Special Prize, 4 first prizes, and 12 gold prizes.

Study Duration

6 years (including 1-year Clinical Practice)InternshipThe 6 years including 1 to 1.5 years compulsory internship. The internship can be finished in Chinese hospitals or in hospitals of your own country.Degree AwardedOn completing the requirements of the teaching program and passing the graduation examinations successfully, international medical undergraduates will be granted a graduation certificate and conferred a medical degree by Southern Medical University , if they meet the degree regulations of Southern Medical University. The English copy of the degree will state MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).CareerAfter obtaining MBBS Degree, the graduates can apply to take the medical licensing examination in the medical council in order to get registered and practice medicine. According to the regulations in different countries, the students may need to do the degree accreditation first. A MBBS degree holder can find jobs in government as well as private hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities. Except this, one can also start his own clinic or pursue study for master's degree.

Southern Medical University, the former First Military Medical University, was founded in October 1951 and notarized as one of the premier medical universities in 1978. The university was handed over to the local government of Guangdong Province and meanwhile renamed as Southern Medial University, in line with the command by the State Department and the Central Military Committee of PLA in August 2004. At present, the university has been authorized by the Department of Education as a key medical university.

ENROLL IN CHINA

Entry Requirements

  1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizensholding a valid foreign passport.

    If both parents or one of the parents of the applicant are Chinese citizens and reside in a foreign country, the applicant should have foreign nationality at birth and hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for at least 4 years. In addition, a record of more than 2 years of actual residence in a foreign country in the last 4 years (by April 30, 2025)is also needed. For people immigrating fromChinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to foreign countries and are applying as international students, please refer to the requirements above.

  2. Applicants should bephysically and mentally healthy, and meet the medical examination standards for applying for a study visa or residence permit in China.

  3. Age Limit and Education Background Requirements:

    (1)Undergraduate students: under the age of 30, with a diploma comparable to the High School Diploma in China..

    (2)Master’sstudents: under the age of 35, with a degree comparable to the Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese universities.

    (3)Doctoral students: under the age of 40, with a degree comparable to the Master’s Degree in Chinese universities.

    (4) General Scholar: under the age of 45, with a degree comparable to the Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese universities.

    (5) Senior Scholar: under the age of 50, with a degree comparable to the Master’s Degree in Chinese universities.

    4. Applicants should have excellent gradesand good conduct,without any record of violation of school rules and regulations, nor any record of public security punishmentor criminal record.

    5. Applicants shouldhave excellent grades and clear purpose of studyingin China, with aGPA of 3.0 or above in the previous academic yearwithoutfailing or repeated subjects.

    6. LanguageProficiency Requirements:

    (1) Master’s /Doctoral Programs

    Chinese Medium Program:Applicantsmust reach a score above 180 in HSK 5or provide other comparable certificates proving Chinese proficiency.

    English Medium Program:Applicantsfrom non-English-speaking countries must reach a score above 90 in TOEFL(20 or above for each item) or 6.5 in IELTS(6.0 or above for each item); or provide other comparable certificates proving English proficiency. Applicants from English-speaking countriesor receiving the last degree with the instruction in English are exempt from submitting the English proficiency certificates, but the certificate of English medium issued by the school graduated from shall be provided.


Application Materials

(1) Scanned copyof valid passport’s information page;

(2)Scanned copyof notarized highest Academic Degree Certificate, Expected Graduation Certificatefor fresh graduates (original one and English-translated one. After being pre-admitted, applicants are required to submit final Graduation Certificate to be eligible for official admission.);

(3) Scanned copies of transcriptof all courses during the highest academic degree education(original one and English-translated one);

(4) Study Plan: A minimum of 1000 words for master’s degree applicants (general scholars) and a minimum of 1500 words for doctoraldegree applicants (senior scholars) written in Chinese (Chinese medium applicants) or English (English medium applicants). The content includes personal studying and working experiences, academic research achievements, research and learning plans during master or doctoral study, personal developing goals after graduation, etc.;

(5)Two original copies of recommendation letters written by professors or associate professors in Chinese or English (with signatures and contact information); only postgraduate candidates are required to submit;

(6) Provisional Acceptance Letter from a professor of Southern Medical University(only postgraduate candidates are required to submit);

(7)Scanned copy of Foreigner's Physical Examination Formcompleted in Chinese or English;

(8)Certificate of language proficiency;

(9) Police Clearance Certificate

(10)ID photo (2-inch blue background photo without hats);

(11) English or Chinese self-introduction video (3-5 minutes, no more than 50M).

Scholarship

In order to promote the mutual understanding, cooperation and exchanges in various fields between China and other countries, the Chinese government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students, teachers and scholars to study and conduct research in Chinese universities. Southern Medical University, as one of the recruit units, welcome all international students to apply and study in our university.

Coverage includes tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance. Specific standards are subject to the information published by the China Scholarship Council  for the corresponding year.

The scholarship awardees’ academic performance will be assessed each year and the result will be submitted to Chinese Scholarship Council. Students must pass the annual assessmentfor receiving the scholarship in the following year, or else the scholarship will be suspended or canceled.
