XJTLU is China’s top international university. It’s China and the United Kingdom’s most outstanding joint research institute. Located in Suzhou, one of China’s most attractive and developed cities with a history over 3000 years, the university is only 20 minutes by high speed train away from China’s largest city Shanghai. Suzhou China-Singapore Industrial Park (SIP) is a project between Chinese and Singaporean governments, and is the home of many multinational high-tech companies. Teachers come from both the parent institutions as well as from around the globe, offering pure English-language instruction and degrees that are valid in both China and the United Kingdom. This school is the first choice for students interested in Chinese traditional culture, experiencing China’s vibrant economy and enjoying English-language classes in China.
The campus at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has expanded rapidly over the past few years, with 12 academic departments, four teaching centres, and excellent support and resource facilities all housed on the north campus.
The north campus development, completed in 2013, provides state-of-the-art teaching, laboratory, research and support facilities. The north campus will accommodate 10,000 students by 2015. This includes a brand new Central Library and Information Centre.
In addition to world-class fully-equipped science and engineering laboratories, the XJTLU Business School, and design studios, the campus also has conference facilities, tennis and basketball courts, a sports field and track, and a variety of catering facilities.
Our students also have access to the facilities in the Higher Education Town, which is shared with a large community of international students. These facilities include the Dushu Lake Sport Centre (with gym, rock climbing and swimming pool), a cinema, and bowling alley. There are also a number of shops and restaurants within the area.
Why choose to study this program?
Introduction Architecture is primarily concerned with the design of buildings. Students of Architecture address the complex problems of designing to house human activity, issues of climate and energy, technology and structure, combining the needs of the internal and external environment. An architect is the only person trained to have a thorough understanding of buildings.
By the time you graduate, you should:
be able to produce architectural proposals that reflect: the history and theory of the discipline; an understanding of purpose to which the building will be put; make appropriate use of the built and natural environments; be able to combine imaginative design with knowledge of constructional and environmental techniques; possess the skills to communicate the ideas and principles behind your designs to others.
What will I study?
Level 1 will lay the foundations for future years. You will explore the representation, modelling and design of small buildings in studio modules. You will also learn about the history and theory of architecture and building technology.
At level 2, you will have more freedom to pursue larger scale design projects in the studio modules; you will continue to learn about building technology and the history and theory of architecture, along with urban studies.
In the final year, you will undertake a series of more complex individual projects, which will require you to demonstrate a full understanding of the design process from the initial concept through to the design of a realistic building, taking into account structural and material considerations.
