The campus at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has expanded rapidly over the past few years, with 12 academic departments, four teaching centres, and excellent support and resource facilities all housed on the north campus.

The north campus development, completed in 2013, provides state-of-the-art teaching, laboratory, research and support facilities. The north campus will accommodate 10,000 students by 2015. This includes a brand new Central Library and Information Centre.

In addition to world-class fully-equipped science and engineering laboratories, the XJTLU Business School, and design studios, the campus also has conference facilities, tennis and basketball courts, a sports field and track, and a variety of catering facilities.

Our students also have access to the facilities in the Higher Education Town, which is shared with a large community of international students. These facilities include the Dushu Lake Sport Centre (with gym, rock climbing and swimming pool), a cinema, and bowling alley. There are also a number of shops and restaurants within the area.

Why choose to study this program?

BEng in Civil Engineering is a new degree programme just opened in 2009. Currently, China is witnessing its fast economic development, as well as unprecedentedly rapid urbanization and industrialization. The largest civil engineering construction is on the progress across China. In opening this Civil Engineering programme, XJTLU will make full use of the great opportunity of civil engineering development in China to educate high-level technical professionals who have an international outlook and be proficient in English that can meet the requirements of the industrial development. The Civil Engineering programme is designed to educate technical professionals who have a solid foundation, all-round professional knowledge and a good command of design, construction and management of building engineering. The programme structure of Civil Design is equivalent to that at the University of Liverpool. Special emphasis is put on innovation, project management, team work and practical capabilities in addition to training of foundation knowledge. The Civil Engineering programme provides graduates with a strong foundation for a career in engineering, together with quantitative and transferable skills which may be applied in a wide variety of industries. During your studies, you will be introduced to both the theory and practice of design and construction. By the time you graduate, you should: be able to undertake a civil engineering design project, given clearly defined requirements and constraints; understand the principles of project management and be able to allocate project resources effectively; understand and be able to apply modern construction practices; be able to critically apply a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques relevant to the analysis and solution of civil engineering problems.

What will I study?

At level 1, you will be introduced to core subjects, which are essential for all civil engineers: design principles engineering mathematics solids and structures mechanics and thermodynamics surveying materials Level 2 will help to develop your knowledge further and to apply this to practical design and construction projects through the study of: engineering structures reinforced concrete and steel soil mechanics hydraulics water resources project management highway and traffic engineering construction materials integrated design

In the final year, you will undertake an independent research project in the form of an individual investigation and report. Alongside your independent research, you will continue to build upon your technical and management skills through the study of:

dynamic systems finite element method structural steelwork, timber and masonry structural design and planning, and urban waste water treatment Main Courses Theoretical Mechanics, Material Mechanics, Structural Mechanics, Engineering Survey, Civil Engineering Materials, Concrete Structure, Principal Theory of Steel Structure, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Foundation Engineering, Bridge and Tunneling, Traffic Engineering, Civil Engineering Construction, Engineering Economy and Project Management Internship and Career Development Graduates are typically employed as graduate trainees within major civil engineering consultancies, contracting organisations, utility companies, etc. Some graduates will use their analytical, communications, management, business and IT skills, to pursue a career outside the engineering profession. DEGREE PROGRAMMES

All degree programmes are taught 100% in English, with a focus on critical thinking and independent learning – key skills needed in the workplace. At XJTLU students are taught how to acquire and create new knowledge and apply it to real-world scenarios.

XJTLU has over 70 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, more than 15 PhD programmes. Subject areas include sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, architecture and urban planning, design, language and culture, media and communications, and business and finance, etc.

Undergraduate students earn double degree: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool, a member of the Russell Group of leading UK universities. Bachelor’s degree at XJTLU is typically 4 years. However, international students have the possibility to skip Year 1 and start directly from Year 2 if they meet certain entry requirements (see below ENTRY REQUIREMENT section).

Postgraduate students receive a University of Liverpool degree that is recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Full-time Master’s programmes are typically 18 months at XJTLU, but we also offer part-time Master’s programmes normally taking 3 years.

If you are leaving home for the first time, don't worry, we will make sure you have everything you need to feel right at home. You can choose from various hotel-style apartments around the campus, including Research Apartments, Scholar's Garden, and MBA Apartments, all within walking distance, where you can enjoy excellent hotel style services and reasonable rates.

We will book accommodation for you as soon as you have been given an unconditional offer and paid us a deposit of RMB10,000 (around USD1,500) to secure your place at the University. Where possible, we try to allocate students to their first choice. However, where this is not possible, an alternative offer will be made.

3 Steps to Apply to a Chinese University

Academic Requirements:

The University accepts a wide variety of school, college and foundation qualifications such as A-Level, AS-Level, IB and other equivalent overseas qualifications.

English Language Requirements:

All students must have acceptable English language qualifications to study at the University. Various English qualifications are acceptable including:

• IELTS 5.5 for year 1 entry , or 6.5 for advanced standing; or
• 75 (iBT) for year 1 entry; or 88 (iBT) for advanced standing
