Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council, is a key comprehensive university under the "211 Project" in Guangdong Province. It is located in the northwestern area of Shantou, a seaside city, with its campus covering a total area of 2,087.40 mu and a total floor space comprising 445,400 sq.m.

STU now has one National Key Discipline, 2 post-doctoral programs, 1 first-level Ph.D. degree program,25 second-level Ph.D. degree programs, 10 first-level master’s degree programs, 84 second-level master’s degree programs, 6 professional Master's Degree programs,1 Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education, 3 provincial key laboratories, 2 key laboratories of Guangdong Educational Department, 2 Ministry of Education Pilot Sites for Innovative Talent, 6 Ministry of Education First-rate Specialties, and 4 Guangdong Provincial Key Programs. The seven-year program Clinical Medicine is also offered.

A modern digital library is available at the University. Medical College has 5 affiliated hospitals with 3,294 hospital beds. The First Affiliated Hospital is awarded “National Top 100 Hospital” and graded as “Upper First-class Hospital”, providing good opportunities of internship for medical students.

Under the auspices of Li Ka Shing Foundation, the University has widely conducted international academic exchanges and cooperations, inviting world-class and well-known scholars to give lectures to the students. Among them are Nobel winners Yang Chen-Ning, Lee Tsung-Dao, and James A. Mirrlees. Course DesignThe Core Course Module: The study in this module is completed between the 1st and the 7th semesters. Students should master the basic principles of study subjects which provide them with major-related knowledge and help develop their skills for clinical practice. This course module is dominated by exams in a numerical grading scale from 0 to 100.

Internship and CareerMedical College of Shantou University has five affiliated hospitals in Shantou, with over 3,000 dedicated staff members and professional healthcare workers to take care of our patients, and a total number of around 2,200 hospital beds. In addition, it has three associated teaching hospitals across Guangdong province, including the largest hospital in southern China, and an aggregate number of approximately 4,500 hospital beds. There are another 10 teaching hospitals in the region where our students participate in clinical training on a continuous basis, providing for some 8,500 additional hospital beds.During years 3 and 4, students are expected to spend several months abroad in our collaborating medical schools to take clinical clerkships and electives. At this time, our collaborating medical schools are UTMB, Drexel University Medical School and University of Rochester Medical School in USA; Melbourne University Medical School in Australia; University of Manitoba Medical School in Canada and Hong Kong University Medical School. In addition, students will fulfill qualification to take the necessary examinations that are required for practice of medicine in USA and Canada, e.g. USMLE and Board examinations.

Degree AwardedOn completing the requirements of the teaching program and passing the graduation examinations successfully, international medical undergraduates will be granted a graduation certificate and conferred a medical degree by the university, if they meet the degree regulations of the university.
