The Master Program in Public Policy at Peking University is a 2 Years long program for international students, taught in English.

IntroductionIntroduction

Founded in 1898, Peking University was originally known as the Imperial University of Peking. It was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has been a leading institution of higher education in China since its establishment. It also served as the highest administration for education at the beginning of its founding. And so far, there are 5000 international students from about 80 countries studying in Peking University.They are provided by many English-taught programs, including several double degree programs and programs run in cooperation with major universities around the world. ProgramAbout the Program

Program Objectives

This program is open to fresh university graduates as well as the experienced professionals and the government officials from different countries, and is designed to train those students in the field of public affairs, public administration, and public policy.

Students are expected to complete the program full time over 2 years. The academic year usually starts from the second week of September and ends in early July the next year.The first year is for full time course-work,and the second year is for the thesis writing and thesis defense.

The program aims to

-1.provide students with an opportunity to develop functional expertise, strategic perspectives, and public policy management tools that they require to operate effectively in a changing public policy environment or to understand such an environment.

2.help students to learn both the successes and failures in China’s public policy making and management, and therefore to understand more about how to manage political, economic and social development in developing countries.

3.introduce students the techniques of policy analysis and program evaluation to resolve complex multi-dimensional policy challenges, as well as sharpen their leadership and communication skills. Program Structure

Instruction:

The language of instruction is English. Classes will incorporate a mix of lectures, seminars, case discussions, tutorials, presentations and so on. Upon application, students could also choose some courses taught in Chinese.

Program Structure:

The program is comprises of two components

- Taught Component (10 courses: 7 compulsory, 3 optional) - Thesis Component (20,000 words)

Master Thesis

Students are expected to bring specific research questions concerning public policy and management to the program, as a part of thesis research preparation. Towards the end of the first semester, a number of faculty members from the school will be invited as potential thesis supervisors, and the school will make arrangement for students to choose their supervisors. The thesis is expected to combine theoretical perspectives, analytical skills and practical experiences of public management, and aiming at solving practical problems. Students must pass oral exam for the thesis.

Degree Requirements

Students are required to successfully complete 30 credits worth of coursework and a master thesis and thesis defense within the required time period. After meeting the above requirements and with the approval of University Degree Committee, the master degree of Management in Public Policy will be awarded.

Fees

The total tuition for the whole program is 80,000 RMB, which should be one off payment. The fee for extension of study is 2,500 RMB per semester.

Application Deadline

All the application materials must be received by us before March 11th, 2013. Any late applications will not be considered.

Admission

The eligibility of all the applicants will be assessed according to the requirements by the School of Government. The Offer Letter will be sent out in late June 2013.

Accommodation

For the international students who will study in Peking University,there are two options for your accomodation as following : 

On-Campus

A. Student rooms in Posts and Telecommunications Hotel: with air conditioner, color TV, telephone, bathroom, and room-cleaning service, about 5 minutes away from Peking University campus by foot. 58 RMB per day per bed for two- or three-room apartment with two beds in each room. 95 RMB per day for single room.
B. Student rooms in Zhongguanyuan Global Village PKU: with color TV, telephone, Internet access, air conditioner and bathroom.
Self-funded Students are required to find their own living accommodation. Please note that students who live off campus must register to the local police station.

C. Student rooms in Shaoyuan Building No. 9 (on-campus): with color TV, telephone, Internet access, air conditioner and bathroom; two persons share one room.
D. King-size rooms in Shaoyuan Building (on-campus):with color TV, telephone, refrigerator, Internet access, bathroom, and air conditioner; two persons share one room.
Notes: Due to the limited accommodation on campus, the Shaoyuan International Students Residences can only provide the house for scholarship students.

ENROLL IN CHINA

Entry Requirements

1.Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport or permanent residents of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan, under the age of 45, have attained a Bachelor’s degree or above.


2. Applicants who are not native English speakers or whose undergraduate education was not in English are required to take an appropriate English Language Proficiency Test and in general achieve a sufficient score, such as,


TOEFL  627 or better (Paper Based Test)


TOEFL 263 or better in CBT (with at least 5.0 in TWE).


TOEFL - iBT 107 or better


IELTS 7.0 or better ( with at least 7.0 in Writing)
