Biological Science BSc (Hons)

Introduction

This degree programme provides you with a comprehensive introduction to the biosciences; equipping you with knowledge and skills which span the discipline from ecology to the molecular sciences and biochemistry.

What knowledge and skills will I acquire? By the time you graduate you should:

understand major issues and challenges in biomedical sciences; be able to understand and describe biological systems; have the skills and understandings to design and conduct experiments and investigations; appreciate the moral, social and ethical issues associated with research and development in the biosciences. What are my career prospects?

Biology graduates are multi-skilled professionals who are qualified for a wide range of careers, including general roles in areas such as management, accountancy and human resources. Biology graduates are also highly sought after in commercial and public sectors, with many working in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, research institutions, health services and forensic science. The programme provides a strong foundation for further graduate level study.

What will I study?

At level 1, you will learn about:

cell structure and function biochemistry, molecular biology and the chemical principles of life genetics biodiversity biochemical methods and analysis statistics organic chemistry human and plant pathogens At level 2, your knowledge will be further developed through the study of:

microbiology molecular and cell biology techniques disease cell signalling In the final year, you will undertake a research project, spanning both semesters. Alongside your project, you will study bioinformatics and gene expression. You may also choose three from the following options:

protein structure and function biochemical messengers genome organization and evolution genome maintenance and rearrangement environmental microbiology, and biotechnology

We will book accommodation for you as soon as you have been given an unconditional offer and paid us a deposit of RMB10,000 (around USD1,500) to secure your place at the University. Where possible, we try to allocate students to their first choice. However, where this is not possible, an alternative offer will be made.

Daily rate: RMB 55 (around USD 8)

The rates above mentioned are based on a 9-month contract.
The rates quoted above do not cover utility charges, such as electricity, water, telephone, wireless access and gas. The electricity rate is RMB0.56 per KWH and water rate RMB2.8 per ton.
Before check-in, you need to pay 3-month rent in advance and 1-month rent as deposit.
We will try to satisfy your first choice. However up to now, the apartments of Option D at MBA Apartments have all been rented out. You can only choose Option A, B or C.
A new building, which is currently under construction, will be completed at the end of 2011 to accommodate overseas students specifically.

3 Steps to Apply to a Chinese University

Academic Requirements:

The University accepts a wide variety of school, college and foundation qualifications such as A-Level, AS-Level, IB and other equivalent overseas qualifications.

English Language Requirements:

All students must have acceptable English language qualifications to study at the University. Various English qualifications are acceptable including:

IELTS 5.5 for year 1 entry , or 6.5 for advanced standing; or
TOEFL 520 (paper-based), or 190 (computer-based) or 75 (iBT) for year 1 entry; or
TOEFL 570 (paper-based), or 230 (computer-based) or 88 (iBT) for advanced standing, or
XJTLU English test.

1.Photocopy of valid passport
With name, passport number & expiration date, and photo included
2.Passport photo
A recent passport-sized photo of the applicant
3.English proficiency test certificate
For example, IELTS or TOEFL, only for applicant whose native language is not English.
4.Two letters of recommendation
From professor or associate professor or equivalents
5.High school academic transcript
6.High school graduate certificate
Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.
