Brief Introduction
Located in Suzhou, an ancient city popularly called “the Paradise on Earth”, Soochow University is a key comprehensive provincial university in Jiangsu Province and also one of China’s top 100 universities under the“Project 211” directed by the Ministry of Education. Better equipped and more robust, Soochow University has grown into a first-rate university in China, covering a wide range of academic disciplines including philosophy, economics, science of law, pedagogy, literature, history, natural science, engineering, agriculture, medical science and management science and enjoying a fairly high reputation both at home and abroad.
Degree Programs
At present, Soochow University runs twenty post-doctoral research stations, six Ph.D. programs of primary disciplines, eighty-five Ph.D. programs (including self-designed majors), one professional doctoral program of primary disciplines, 209 master’s degree programs(including self-designed majors), ten professional master’s degree programs as well as 108 undergraduate programs.
Disciplines & Laboratory
In addition, the university has four national key disciplines, twenty-four provincial and ministerial key disciplines (including six incubators for national key disciplines), one national engineering laboratory, one incubator for national key laboratory, twelve provincial and ministerial key laboratories, and three provincial and ministerial engineering centers. It also houses one national base for training personnel in the basic disciplines of liberal arts, one national base for training personnel in the basic disciplines of natural science, one key research base of the Ministry of Education for humanities and social sciences and one key research base of the State General Administration of Sports for social sciences.
Faculty & Staff Members
The university has now about 50,000 students, including 12,744 postgraduates, 22,853 undergraduates and 9,010 adult education students. Among its 4098 faculty and staff members, four are full-time employed academicians (including one member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who is also a member of the Third-World Academy of Sciences and three members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), six are part-time employed academicians and 1,633 are full professors and associate professors.
International Exchange
China’s reform and opening-up policy has provided the university with excellent opportunities for international academic exchange and cooperation. Soochow University has established cooperative relationships with more than 100 universities and institutions in Japan, France, Korea, Singapore, Germany, U.S.A., Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Every year the university accepts over 2,000 international students to study Chinese language and literature and other relevant majors.
Soochow University consists of five campuses with a total area of more than 3,118 mu and a floor area of around 1.56 million square meters. The university library has a collection of about 4 million volumes and subscribes to about 2,800 domestic and foreign journals and magazines. It also has advanced equipment in the Center of Analysis and Measurement and the Center of Information Networks. The university has a publishing house which publishes academic journals such as Foreign Silk and Soochow University Journal in four discipline-oriented series.
Goal
In recent years, Soochow University has been relying on strong economic strength and favorable cultural geographic conditions of Southern Jiangsu and exploring effective ways to serve local economy and social development, which is now regarded as its own distinct feature and motive power for running the school. The university has set up a goal to build it into a high-level university and make it “first-class at home and well known abroad”. Now with unprecedented insight and courage, it is moving steadily toward the realization of this goal.
Dormitory for overseas students
The dormitories are mainly offered to the long-term students and the short-term students groups. There are 164 rooms for boys and 125 rooms for girls, which can hold about 560 people. Inside the room there are beds (not bedding), desks, air-condition, a water heater, a television, telephones, a refrigerator, Internet lines and an attached shower room.
Every student can have free use of Internet (if he has a laptop), 50 KVA of electricity (80 KVA for single occupancy) and 4 cubic of water per month. Overuse of water and electricity will be charged accordingly. The room is charged for the whole semester, from 20 th February to 20 th July, or from 20 th August to 20 th January. Every student staying in the dorms before or after this period, or he wants to pay by days will be charged by 35 RMB/bed per day (60 RMB for single occupancy). Any student who wants to keep the dorm in winter or summer holidays should notify the Office of Overseas Students and pay 1000 RMB every room per month. The accommodation fees will not be refunded during the semester without any special reason. An extra fee 400 RMB should be paid for bedding when the students move in.
When the students want to apply for the room, they need go to the school of overseas education to sign the agreement and pay the accommodation fee first. After that they go to the front desk of the dormitory, pay the key deposit 50 RMB and get the key.
If any student who wants to book a room, he can do it beforehand by telephone, fax, e-mail, letter, etc.

Each student can have a free use of 1 KWA everyday. The overuse will be charged by 1RMB/KWA and the students need pay 20 RMB per month if they use the washing machines in building 5 and 7.
Healthy individuals, non-Chinese citizens holding valid foreign ordinary passports;
2. Those applying for a master's degree must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualifications, with excellent academic performance, and generally should not be over 35 years old.
3. Those applying for a doctoral degree must hold a master's degree or equivalent qualifications, have excellent academic performance, and generally be no older than 40 years of age.
4. Did not receive any other scholarships (excluding various one-time bonuses) established by Chinese governments at all levels or by the admitted institutions during the application process.
(1) Scanned copy of the first page of the passport (for ordinary passports valid until March 1, 2026), applicants who are studying in China are required to submit the visa page of the passport.
(2) Notarized proof of the highest academic degree. If the applicant is a student, a pre-graduation certificate or a certificate of being a student in school must be submitted by the school where the applicant is studying. If the language is other than English, an English translation and an English or Chinese notarized copy must also be provided.
(3) Academic transcripts (starting from the undergraduate stage). The scanned copy of the transcripts should include the academic stages of undergraduate, master's (if applicable), and doctoral (if applicable), up to the most recent semester. The transcripts should be issued and stamped by the academic affairs office, graduate school, or relevant student management department of the institution where you are studying. Both Chinese and English transcripts can be provided. If the language is other than English, an English translation and a Chinese or English notarized copy must also be provided.
(4) Language proficiency certificates:
- For applications to Chinese-taught programs: The Chinese proficiency must reach the new HSK Level 5 (180 points or above) and the supporting documents must be valid for the period until June 15, 2025 or later.
- For applications to English-taught programs: At least one of the English proficiency requirements must be met: TOEFL score ≥ 80 / IELTS score ≥ 6.0 / native speaker of English / the teaching language of the previous academic stage was English / other valid proof of equivalent English proficiency recognized by the school (valid until June 15, 2025 or later).
(5) Two recommendation letters provided by a professor or an associate professor (the letters must be issued after December 1, 2024). The recommendation letters should indicate the position of the recommender and their contact email. The content should mainly cover the applicant's requirements for studying in China, as well as the evaluation of the student's comprehensive abilities and future development. The letters can only be written in Chinese or English.
(6) Study Plan for Coming to China. A study plan in both Chinese and English (no less than 1000 words) must be submitted. The study plan can only be written in either Chinese or English.
(7) Intentional Acceptance Letter for Graduate Supervisor. The template "2025-2026 Academic Year Intentional Acceptance Letter for Graduate Admission by Supervisor for International Students of Soochow University" can be downloaded from the "Soochow University Online Application System for International Students". All students applying for graduate programs must provide this (students applying for master's programs can choose to provide it). The acceptance letter must have the signature of the supervisor and the signature and seal of the relevant department head.
(8) A health certificate valid for no more than 6 months (certificates issued on or after October 1, 2024 are considered valid). Download the "Foreigner's Physical Examination Form" and complete the examination at a local official hospital. Applicants should conduct the examination strictly in accordance with the items required in the "Foreigner's Physical Examination Form" (downloadable template). The examination form must be filled out in either Chinese or English, signed by a doctor, and stamped with the hospital's official seal at the place where a personal photo is attached.
(9) Certificate of No Criminal Record. The applicant is required to submit a valid certificate of no criminal record issued by the local public security authority. Generally, it should be a document issued within the past 6 months prior to the application submission. (10) "Economic Guarantee Letter" (downloadable template), deposit certificate of the guarantor (not less than 5000 US dollars), and income certificate.
(11) Other materials that are beneficial for students' application: including the signed CSC scholarship application form, award certificates, published papers (mandatory for doctoral candidates, optional for master's candidates), proof of participation in international conferences, proof of volunteer activities, etc.
The scholarship covers: tuition fees, accommodation fees, living expenses and comprehensive medical insurance fees.
