Introduction Architecture is primarily concerned with the design of buildings. Students of Architecture address the complex problems of designing to house human activity, issues of climate and energy, technology and structure, combining the needs of the internal and external environment. An architect is the only person trained to have a total understanding of buildings. What knowledge and skills will I acquire? By the time you graduate, you should: 1. be able to produce architectural proposals that reflect: the history and theory of the discipline; an understanding of purpose to which the building will be put; make appropriate use of the built and natural environments 2. be able to combine imaginative design with knowledge of constructional and environmental techniques 3. possess the skills to communicate the ideas and principles behind your designs to others. What are my career prospects? Architecture graduates can go into design practice or may be employed in the construction industry, property development and other areas, such as the creative media. What will I study? Level 1 will lay the foundations for future years. You will explore the representation, modelling and design of small buildings in studio modules. You will also learn about the history and theory of architecture and building technology. At level 2, you will have more freedom to pursue larger scale design projects in the studio modules; you will continue to learn about building technology and the history and theory of architecture, along with urban studies.
In the final year, you will undertake a series of more complex individual projects, which will require you to demonstrate a full understanding of the design process from the initial concept through to the design of a realistic building, taking into account structural and material considerations.
