The underlying philosophy of preventive medicine physicians is to promote health and wellness of both communities and individuals by the prevention of disease and injury. Preventive medicine physicians devote most or all of their careers to health promotion/disease prevention. Physicians with graduate training from the Public Health and Preventive Medicine program at the Wenzhou Medical University gain the skills necessary to pursue a variety of careers.

Education Objectives:
This program aims to offer a wide variety of comprehensive scientific knowledge to prepare students for further medical education or future medical careers in public health and preventive medicine. Students will have opportunities to explore their own research interests through an in-depth study of relevant fields. The program is designed to enable students to integrate medical knowledge with analysis of general medical phenomena. Students are also expected to demonstrate a broad command of knowledge in research methods and experimental insights.

Careers in Public Health and Preventive Medicine:
This program opens up career opportunities in health care management and research focusing on development and evaluation of health outcomes, disease prevention and health promotion in medical practice settings, as well as in community and public health organizations.

You can pursue careers in:

  • Clinical Preventive Medicine - Preventive medicine physicians work in both public and private clinical settings, focusing on activities such as immunization programs, screening programs, risk identification, and risk reduction. Implementation of health promotion/disease prevention programs in various health care delivery organizations, including direct provision of clinical preventive medicine in the context of primary care, are part of this career option.

  • Public Health Practice - Preventive medicine physicians in public health have the opportunity to work at the local, state, or federal level. Public health physicians identify the health needs of the community, set priorities, and develop health programs. Disease surveillance as well as environmental health monitoring are major components of the public health physician’s work.

  • Research and Academic Medicine - Preventive medicine physicians conduct epidemiological research into the causes of chronic and infectious diseases and injuries, examine risks encountered in the occupational and environmental settings, and investigate interventions for prevention of disease and injury.

  • Administration and Management - Preventive medicine physicians have the clinical background in addition to the training in epidemiology and health care systems needed to manage a health organization. As managers, they are actively involved in health planning, policy development, cost efficacy, resource allocation, and program evaluation.
