Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University was initially known as "Qiushi Shuyuan" (Qiushi Academy), one of the earliest modern academies of higher learning established in China. ZJU is a comprehensive national university covering all study fields. It also provides the overseas students with good study and living conditions. It had its first enrollment of international students in 1979 and since then, more than 20,000 international students coming from 115 countries across the world, have come to study in the school.

The course aims to educate students to study basic theory and elementary knowledge in medicine, gain basic clinical skills of some common diseases diagnosis processing, have the primary treatment ability to urgent, difficult and severe symptoms, and be qualified for careers in hospitals, the medical and health units, medical science research departments as well as other organizations related medicine.

Study Duration 6 years (including 1-year Clinical Practice)

InternshipThe internship is arranged in the final year. You can choose to do the internship/training in China or their home country.

If you want to do internship in China, you need to pass the HSK 4 to contact with the patients and the tuition fee for this year is as normal RMB 37,800 per year. The internship will be carried out in the 6 Grade III Class A affiliated hospitals of Zhejiang University. These hospitals have a total capacity of over 7700 beds, 8780,000 emergency visits and 238,000 inpatients.


If you want to do the internship in your home country, there are no requirements on HSK level and no need to pay for the tuition fee.

And, students have to take the final examination on Theory Test and Clinical Evaluation in WHU before graduation.

Degree AwardedMBBS Degree: On completing the requirements of the teaching program and passing the graduation examinations successfully, international medical undergraduates will be granted a graduation certificate and conferred a medical degree by the ZHU, if they meet the degree regulations of the university. The English copy of the degree will state MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).

After obtaining MBBS Degree, the graduates can apply to take the medical licensing examination in the medical council in order to get registered and practice medicine. According to the regulations in different countries, the students may need to do the degree accreditation first. A MBBS degree holder can find jobs in government as well as private hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities. Except this, one can also start his own clinic or pursue study for master’s degree.

About Zhejiang University

The International College of Zhejiang University is a special teaching and administrative institute responsible for enrollment, service of international students and the Chinese as Second Language (CSL) program. It consists of Office of General Affairs, Office for the International Promotion of Chinese Language, Office of Degree Student Affairs, Office of CSL program, and Foreign Experts and Overseas Students Service Center, whose head office is located in Yuquan Campus with two other administrative offices located in Zijianggang Campus and Huajiachi Campus respectively.

The university had its first enrollment of international students in 1979 and since then, more than 20,000 international students have come to study in the school. In 2008, the International College gave admission to, both long-term and short-term, more than 3,500 overseas students coming from 115 countries across the world, including 116 doctoral candidates, 158 graduate students, 1006 undergraduate students, 158 visiting students, more than 1,400 long-term Chinese language students and about 640 students of short-term programs. The college has a strong teaching faculty composed of more than 30 full-time teachers and over 40 part-time teachers, including 9 full professors and 22 associate professors.

In addition to the long and short term Chinese Language and Culture programs, the college has been running an undergraduate program of Chinese Studies (with focus on Economics and Trade/Tourism Management), and a graduate program of Chinese Studies will be offered when preparation is completed. We have a HSK(Chinese Proficiency Test) Test Center which holds the test on April, June and November every year. The majority of the students attending the language program have achieved satisfactory grades in the past tests. We also run short-term programs for group students, on subjects such as Chinese language, culture, economics and trade, business administration, music, weiqi, calligraphy, painting and so on. Each year about 600 students international students come to our university.

Every year, the International College accepts over 200 Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship students. Meanwhile, we also offer college scholarships to international students who achieve excellent academic performance, abide by laws and school regulations and study have studied at our school for more than one academic year. We attach great importance to building long-term and close co-operation with foreign universities and overseas study agencies. Each year hundreds of university exchange students and students recommended by study abroad agencies come to our school to attend academic programs.

Our alumni all over the world have been bringing into full play what they had learnt in our school and contributing greatly to exchange, co-operation and friendship between Chinese people and peoples across the world. After completing their studies or graduating from our university, many overseas students pursue further studies in our school, become the mainstay in governmental or higher learning institutions, take jobs in joint ventures or foreign-invested companies in China or build careers in the fields of Chinese teaching, trade or culture exchange with China.

The college has been vigorously developing Chinese language teaching programs with overseas partners. Entrusted by National Office of Chinese Language Council International, we have worked together with the University of Western Australia, the University of Rhode Island (USA) and the Ritsumeikan Asia-Pacific University (Japan) to set up the Confucius Institute on their respective campuses. The International College and the State Street Corporation, the world's largest financial service provider, have jointly established a Chinese Culture Center in Boston, USA, to which we send teachers on a regular basis to give Chinese courses to State Street's employees. In co-operation with the university Graduate School and the School of Humanities, we have also been running a post-graduate program on Chinese language and culture in Malaysia.

There are many opportunities for fieldwork and after-class activities provided by our college each year, including agriculture visits to tea plantations and farms, industry visits, trips to Xi'an, Hainan island, Thousand-islet Lake and ancient waterside towns. Our students are also strongly encouraged to participate in all kinds of stage performances, speech contests, and various sports events and will be invited to receptions for major holidays and festivals.

Living on Yuquan Campus

The Foreign Experts and Overseas Students Service Center of Zhejiang University is responsible for providing services such as accommodation, food and drink, management of the classrooms within the building of the International College etc.
The main office of the Foreign Experts and Overseas Students Service Center is located on the 4th floor of International College Building on Yuquan Campus.
The small coffee shop on the second floor of the lobby provides facsimile service.
Students living in school dormitories should observe Regulations on International Students Dormitory Management. Anyone who violates the regulations shall be penalized accordingly.

On-campus Dining

There are three international Student dining halls respectively located in the International College Building on Yuquan Campus, Overseas Student Dormitory Building at the main gate of Yuquan Campus and Overseas Student Dormitory Building on Hua-jia-chi Campus. Meals are served in a a la carte manner.
Students can also have your meals in the student cafeterias on different campuses. Before having meals there, you need to buy a pre-paid Meal Card from the cafeterias and it is advisable to bring your own dinnerware.

Drinking water

You cannot directly drink tap water in China. Please drink boiled water or buy bottled water.

Entry Requirements

1. General Requirements

1.1 Non-Chinese citizens with valid foreign passport.

1.2 Under the age of 25. Applicants must have graduated from high school (Those who provide pre-graduation certificate or student status certificate at application MUST provide senior high school diploma no later than registration).

1.3 With proper moral conduct, in good health with no infectious disease or any physical or mental diseases that may affect study.

2.Requirements on Citizenship

Requirements of the regulations set in the Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met

2.1 Applicants who have given up their original Chinese citizenship (including residents in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan)and become foreign citizens, must acquire foreign citizenship before April 30, 2021, and must have lived abroad more than 2 years from April 30, 2021 to April 30, 2025 (more than 9 months of residence abroad per year can be considered as one year, taking entry and exit stamps as evidence).

2.2 If the applicant has acquired foreign citizenship automatically at the time of birth in a foreign country, whose parents were both Chinese citizens, or one of the parents was a Chinese citizen, parent’s (with Chinese citizenship) permanent resident in foreign country should be obtained prior to the birth of the applicant. Applicants must have lived abroad more than 2 years from April 30, 2021 to April 30, 2025 (more than 9 months of residence abroad per year can be considered as one year, taking entry and exit stamps as evidence).

 Note: If the applicant is concluded to have Chinese citizenship by the Chinese public security department after application, admission or enrollment, the applicant will be disqualified from application, admission or enrollment or withdrawal from school will be required.

3. Language Proficiency Requirements

3.1 Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must have HSK certificate. Specific HSK requirements could be found in the catalog of Chinese-taught undergraduate programs. Applicants whose compulsory courses were taught in Chinese during secondary education (junior and senior high school) can be exempt from submitting HSK certificate.

3.2 There are no Chinese language proficiency requirements for the applicants of English-taught programs. If applicants’ native language is not English, they should provide score report of English language test (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS/OTHER).Specific requirements could be found in the catalog of English-taught undergraduate programs

Language Proficiency(for non-native English speakers): 

IELTS: 6.0 overall or above (academic module) with a minimum of 5.0 in each component. TOEFL-iBT:75 or above with a minimum of 15 in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.  Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 170 or above 

Exemption Requirements: IB, A-level or other international standardized test score reports 

Applicants must have scored 70% or above in Math, Physics, Chemistry,a nd Biology (Zoology & Botany) during high school. 

Application Materials

1. A photocopy of passportfront page. The expiry date of the passport should be after March 1, 2026.

2. Senior high school diploma. Those who provide pre-graduation certificate or student status certificate at application MUST provide senior high school diploma no later than registration.

3. Academic transcripts for all the courses in senior high school.

4. Language proficiency certificates.

Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must provide the photocopy of HSK certificate.

Applicants for English-taught programs must provide grade report of TOEFL or IELTS test, or other proof which can reflect the applicants’ English proficiency. (Not required for English native speakers)

5.  Personal statement, in Chinese or English, should include study experience, reasons for application, personal strengths. No less than 800 words.

6.  Two recommendation letters from high school teachers. (Teachers’ signature, contact phone number and email address must be put on the letter.)

7. Award-winning Certificates related to academic courses during senior high school period. (If applicable)

8. Applicants who have given up their original Chinese citizenship and become foreign citizens shall provide:

8.1Documents certifying the cancellation of Chinese citizenship,

8.2Documents certifying the cancellation of Chinese household registration,

8.3 Documents certifying the acquirement of foreign citizenship,

8.4Exit and Entry Record on passport, from April 30, 2021 to April 30, 2025,

8.5 Self-Statement Form of Nationality Status and Nationality Confirmation and Guarantee Letter (Download).

9. Applicants who have acquired foreign citizenship automatically at the time of birth in a foreign country, whose parents were both Chinese citizens, or one of the parents was a Chinese citizen shall provide:

9.1Documents certifying acquiring foreign citizenship at the time of birth,

9.2Documents certifying parent’s (with Chinese citizenship) permanent residence in foreign country before the birth of the applicant,

10. Applicants under the age of 18 (by September 1st, 2025) should submit Letter of Guardian Guarantee(Download)and the guardian must be an adult living in Chinese mainland.

11. Commitments for Zhejiang University Undergraduate Application (Download). The PDF version of the Commitments must be clearly and completely filled out and hand-signed. Applications without the Commitments will not be accepted.
